Hi everyone,
I'm looking for new ideas (and maybe some old ones too) that people have for getting traffic to their site. I use some traffic exchanges, FFA pages, and safelists along with a few other things, but I'm always looking for new ways to get people to see what my home based business is all about. After all it doesn't matter how great it is, if no one ever knows about it.
So, what are some great ways to get more visitors and recruits?
Thanks a lot.

Free for all's are not a good idea and are looked at in a bad light by Google, less so by MSN & Yahoo who seem slow to pickup most things anyway.
The formulae for high traffic to a site is simple but the reality is a fair bit more hard work.
Page 1 on all major engines for your keywords
Prime directory submissions (especially country of origin)
One way IBL's using effective anchor text
Paid for links on legit high traffic sites in your chosen market sector but avoid sitewide links at all costs unless the site is very small
Plus all the traditional ways of marketing like business cards, flyers, networking etc.
Good luck :-)

Here's some suggestions, Frank:
Search Engine Optimization for your website with analysis. For this I reccomend SEOonline which you can get from]
http://www.magneticprofits.com/seo
***the above will basically do for you most of what Ray was talking about, like he says, it's hard work, but the software above cuts that dramatically. You could do it all manually, but it will take you a LONG time and it sounds like you want to get off the ground ASAP.
However, quite expensive, though it is the best tool around on the net TODAY.
Whilst that is my personal preference, it sounds to me like you might want to start from the basics and work your way up anyway so you get the knowledge yourself.
The problem is that the search engine "alogarthyms" are changing regularly to catch out "cheaters" so in fact the best deal I would reccomend is to go for the software package downloadable from http://www.lifestyle-guides.com/indix.html
Forget the hype around it, you need to look at the products which you get with the package. This is a] by an English bloke who really knows what he's talking about, b] up to date [late 2005 release] and also teaches you everyhting you need to know about "keyword optiization", "keyword lists" and "how to build a google friendly page"
In other words what I give you a link to above, if you choose to check it out word for word, is tutorials to go "hold-you-by-the-hand" about what Ray has just pointed out to you that you need to do.
I hope it helps and for 10USD you can't go wrong really.
That's if you're serious about your business, of course...which you are
PS Frank, it sounds like you're in MLM. Here is a way to get a free back office and website if you're in the health and wellness industry side:
http://www.iwaus.com/2004058
You would then have another website to put on your card or send people to check out and increase your prospects.

Lol..I think it depends on the nature of your website. With my parents website competitions are a great way to get a lot more traffic.

Almost all of the suggestions you have heard are effective marketing methods. What I can advise though is what marketing methods to avoid.
First, even if reliable people tell you that making thousands of doorway and cloaked web pages with hidden text in it is one of the most effective ways to market your site and be seen by search engines and rank high in them. Do not ever believe them. What they are suggesting is a form of spamming that will only result in your website being blacklisted by the major search engines. Don’t put your website at risk by doing this.

Biz - I don't think any reputable company would ever advise those kinds of tactics. They went out with the ark IMO.
I4U - if you want someone to optimise your site then you are best off going with personal recommendation and someone who has proven results. Lots of people will offer their services, some will even promise you top rankings and guarantee you more traffic. These people are best avoided in droves.

I thought the ark came a few hundred years after those tactics but I could be wrong
Fully agree with you, Biz needs to get recommendations, actually check up on client opinions, and get current 'proof' of rankings across a variety of projects and keywords. If they aren't happy to oblige you, drop them quick as genuine pro's will be able to back up their work without taking a 'fence'. Sorry Nige, just couldn't help dropping that one in. And Yes! If you had a £1 for every time you've heard that ........

Matt and Tin, you're both right.
I was actually referring to "well-meaning" friends who might give these kinds of advice. It's also a red flag for companies who might advice someone to do just that -- believe me there are a lot of shady companies out there.
Tin actually made a good point when it comes to looking for an internet marketing company. You really should get recommendations and ask for the appropriate credentials as well as proof of what they have done for their clients, service wise. One good way of immediately determining the “professionalism” of an internet marketing or site submission company is if they promise actual ranking numbers. The moment they say that they can guarantee you a Top 20 ranking, run the other way fast.

This is not such a crazy suggestion (apart from the health and safety aspect).
Low cost tactics such as t-shirts with your domain name plastered across it works great, especially worn in the right place (outside a competitors shop would be a great place).
Guerrilla Marketing tactics like this work very well if applied with a bit of thought.

Try this guy Micheal Cheney. (http://www.websitemarketingbible.com/?cr=pageloader) Sign up to the free videos about web marketing. Some very useful info there.
It's all about link popularity(quality links), Keyword optimization, Pay-per-click(if you can afford it) and hard work.
