Following on from the reputation monitoring thread earlier this week I was wondering what key features and functionality people require that use software like this for brand tracking and reputation monitoring?

We've been developing some software over the past 12 months that is currently at an alpha release stage. The basic brand tracking and monitoring functionality is there, in addition to this we also have the functionality to look at the reach and geographic location of the sites.

Can anyone think of any other major functionality that they would like to have available?

One of the software packages i've used gives you the ability to identify social authorities on your brand. These are people who engage in conversations about your brand, blog about it, write reviews about it etc.
It will also tell you their Facebook profile, Twitter ID, Linkedin profile, forums they use etc.
From a link building point of view it's a great tool, but the main advantage is that if these people have a lot of clout in the socialsphere you can engage with them directly, for example: ask them to test new products and review them online etc.

Thanks petera, do you mind letting me know the name of the software you use? That does sound useful.

The software is called Radian 6 - this is the one that was responsible for the betting company getting a heads up on the Michael Owen transfer to Man Utd - http://sexdrugsandseo.wordpress.com/2009/09/28/the-benefits-of-social-media-monitoring/

The licenses are quite pricey though
