Hi
Is there anyone out there that is developing or has developed a new software to rival Sage and Quick Books?

My first question would be are you looking for better price, better service or better functionality? Or something maybe more simple becaue they are too complicated and thus costly?
Nothing springs to mind but I know how awful the service can be with sage.

Yep, we have: www.kashflow.co.uk
It's already developed, functional and being used by a couple of hundred businesses.
It's being developed further wih a big upgrade due in January.
It's aimed at people like us (non accountants) and it will provide a Sage export to give to your accountant.
Why do you ask?

Hi
The reason for the question, is that obviously whilst I am out visiting clients, I hear time and time again how they dont like Quick Books or they don't like Sage. Sage has headed the market for so long now, I just thought it would be nice to offer my clients an alternative.

I just purchased 2 licenses for Kashflow (after playing around with it for 2 months to test it) :)
Well recommended !

I wouldnt say that kashflow is a rival to Sage or Quickbooks but it is a lot easier for the small business owner to understand and has a number of nice features.
The big plus point will be the ability to download to sage which the vast majority of accountants use.
I would recommend it for its simplicity. :)

Would Nic's version be renamed 'Koshflow?'
Woops, off to Time Out!

TASBooks has been around for ages, and is much better than Sage. It's so good that Sage have bought the company. For a while I thought they might kill it off, but that doesn't seem to be happening.
My part time bookeeper has to use Sage when she works for others, and hates it. That's good for me as she looks forward to her day with us!

I should have added that if you want to be really cutting edge you could take a look at SQL-Ledger (www.sql-ledger.org).
It would be non-trivial to set this up for use in the UK, but if you look at the References page, there is certainly one British company using it.

I use SQL-Ledger, and am thinking of developing it as a product when some of my other projects are over. It is a very professional level package with huge potential. As it's open source software (my speciality), it can be made to work with other packages and can connect directly to your website if your willing to put the work in.
There is a sample COA for the UK, and I certainly find it perfect for what I do.
This is a package that is accessible via the web (like kashflow), and you can install it on a server in your office. I'd say it's a little more "industrial" than kashflow, and would have a steeper learning curve. I might be saying that as I'm too cheap to buy the manual until I'm supporting other people using this package.
If anyone is interested in taking a look at this package I can set up some sample sites.
Cheers,
James

Certainly would be interested.
I've never done more than take a look at the demo sites and read some of the documentation. Apart from the COA, it struck me that there would need to be some localisation of words, and also not sure if it can cope with some of the nuances of UK VAT, eg entering multiple rates for one transaction.
But as a project it seems a good way forward, as in using an opensource DB it brings the Holy Grail of a single database business into sight.

There's a language file for the UK, and I'm certain multiple tax rates are supported although I haven't had to use anything like that myself yet.
I've set you up a copy, any feedback as to what you think of it would be greatly appreciated. I'm about to PM you login details.

We've just started using SQL-Ledger. Its been very easy to install and seems to deal with localisation well. I'm not an accountant but it seems to have everything we need as a small business. Great community support too.

I can provide an online software package that rivals any package out there.
Fully user friendly and fully intergrated. :)

Hello,
Sorry I posted this elsewhere too - but its the same answer to a different question:
Here's a good software package, its free and has exceptional reviews.
It's comparable to Sage or Quickbooks.
