Ltd or not?

Hi,

Why do so many people go Ltd. What are the benefits of this, I have been a sole trader and in a partnership and it's made no difference to anything much. Is it better to be a Ltd company, or is it just for image?

I don't know anything about Ltd companies, simple info' please.
