View Full Version : Peter Jones - Dragons den

I'm an avid viewer of dragons den, as i note many of you are!
I decided to find out a bit more about those 'dragons' and came across the website for Peter Jones. I had a good look round, and noticed that those with business ideas can submit them to him and he will give a personal opinion.
So, i'm wondering if anyone has submitted any ideas and what the result was, if any???

I really liked his mind set video. I thought it was very compelling.
He is about mine and tophat's age.
But he wouldn't like us as we never wear a suit.

i notice that everytime someone appears in jeans, or a bit 'casual' he points it out.
Surprises me though, if you're asking for £50-£200k surely you should make an effort!?
didnt realise it was him that bought red letter days.

Duncan Bannatyne is running a competition in his magazine "The Sharpe Edge" where you can win a chance to pitch your idea.
I was tempted to put forward my website idea but I was put off by the lack of confidentiality. Yes I know there is an agreement on the site but I prefer things to be written down and signed.

I said something about how it was interesting that he was worth more money than all the other 4 put together and was by far the most blunt. Didn't step around the subject, but always tells them whether it's crap or great without trying to sound polite. Maybe just me, but I simply admire the sheer honesty of it.

Peter Jones is the only one I like. He's the only one that asks about the individual and where they are coming from.
I like his style.
But I bet each and every one of then would eat their grandmother to screw an extra 5% discount from their suppliers.

I think I shall pursue it further and see how it goes, the idea of mine is one that I cannot afford to start in the near future without an investor, so nothing really to lose.
I received 2 replies, one was pretty much canned reply and the second was alot more personal, the canned reply had a "peter jones" signature image, the second mail was a plain text mail with "Peter Jones" typed, so it is possible it was from him.

The best sales pitches are stories - and he was reeling after that - totally dizzy and enticed!

She appeared barking mad but I can see a big market for those calming children tapes - there's the National Childbirth Trust catalogue for a start, Tridias, Urchin, all the top range middle class outlets would be able to sell it.

This is a great program because on the outside people are asking for money, but the real win is the skills of the investors and thier contacts.
It also works as great PR for investors and thier own interests.

I had a one2one with Duncan Banatyne, well i say a one2one it was in front of 80 business people and film cameras, nice guy really, simply said that the best way to make money is not to put hurdles in your way, for example " I can't make more money cos that will take more time and I have children to look after"
His view was you are delibrately putting hurdles in your way before you have even thought about how it may be resolved. He's OK.

a one on one with Duncan Banatyne in front of 80 people - its like a scene from one of my most terrifying yet, strangley erotic nightmares.
I'm sure he really does know what he is doing and he comes over much mroe friendly in that lunchtime business make over show he does.
I get the impression he just had better things to do than Dragon's Den when they were filming. He is so Rude and the cheesy one liners - where do they come from?

I know what you mean, I think in his mind he really does not understand how people can not become millionaires, especially as he only started with One IceCream Van, before that he was on the dole.

I think the Dragon's only do the TV show for:
a) notoriety & publicity, or
b) as a pure speculative gamble.
I occasionally rub shoulders with "industry" (i.e. not pure financial) investors who are on a wealth par with the Dragons, and honestly, they would never invest anything under a million, and are ideally looking to invest several millions. Investing £100K, say, would only be a distraction.
That's why I said I hope the dragon's actually put some serious time in, but I have my doubts.
David.

Submitting your ideas are great, but best to put IP rights on it before you do.
I have looked at investors and through my enquiries i am now recieving help through seeda (south east england development agency) and fse (finance south east) they together have an investment readiness training course.
If any of you are based in the south east please contact them i have actually made better contacts through them in the last 2 months including a 1 hour free session with an IP consultant.
Great service great people.

A while back I emailed Simon Woodroffe who was one of the original dragons about my business, he emailed me back to dicuss over the phone and was quite pleasant and it lasted about 20 mins.
It turned out that my idea was a micro investment (20k) therefore not something he could help me with although he liked the idea and gave me a killer tip as a freebie which once I looked into it further was a very good tip which will help me loads.
This was intiially about 7 months ago and about 6 weeks ago rang me out of the blue to ask how it was going and when the site was due for launch and as such is now on the opt in list for when it goes live. Would have been great to have him as an investor but I was happy he took the time out to ring me out of the blue and pass me one lead as well as an idea to make it even better.

Same here, i thought that idea was brilliant. Seemed as though he got a good deal even though he had to give away 40% of his business but I guess what he is getting in return is well worth it!
