A close friend of mine’s daughter died this year of a heart condition. She was 11 years old and she suffered a heart attack in her sleep, she was not ill. The condition is basically like cot death but happens in infants rather than babies as is known as infant mortality syndrome.
In June of 2006 I have pledged to cycle from London to Paris in an effort to raise money in her name. The ride is over 300 miles long and takes 3 days to complete. In order to do this I need to raise £1100, £600 of which will go towards the charity CRY.
This is my only new year’s resolution. I now have 6 months of hard training ahead of me, while also juggling a business. Going to be tough but let’s face it, if something is easy to attain then it usually not worth having anyway. This year I cycled from Manchester to Blackpool and while I was training it gave me a lot of time to think. When you are aware from your phone and computer, it really allows you to look at your business without being distracted and you can resolve a lot of problems logically in ways that you would never normally think of.
In the coming months I will ask people here if they would like to sponsor me on the ride. I will not hound people, I will simply make people aware that I am doing it and how to get involved if interested.
Thanks
Matt, MK Printing

in the new year Matt talk to me and i will support you as much as i can.
I have already told family and friends that any monies they would spend on me for next xmas is to be donated to the local breast care clinic.
My mother-in-law died on my daughters birthday in july of this year. This has been a tough xmas so far for my wife e.g buying a card that says Dad on it etc.. Xmas was always a big thing at Pat's house.
I want to get a qualification that enables me to train under 12's in sport - especially football. I currently help train my sons school team, but would like to help them more.

Those stories really touched me, with so many poeple around monaing about the stress of Xmas shopping etc those stories put things into perspective.
Nigel, I really do feel for your wife, my friend lost her dad this year to cancer and was doing fine up until this week, the christmas season has just brought it all home which has left her devastated. I hope you and your family get through it okay.
The sponsored cycle leaves me breathless just thinking about it, you could set up pay pal in the new year then we can all sponsor you and contribute easily.

These stories make you remember what's important...
Do let us all know about how to donate Matt - my daughter's 11 years old and I can't bear thinking about what this Christmas would be like without her or any of my other children. I'll be donating :)

Thanks very much people for all your support and I will let you all know how to get involved when I know more myself.
To make it even worse for the family is her birthday on December 21st. It is going to be a very hard Christmas there this year.
You can actually read the article about Amy here http://www.manchesteronline.co.uk/men/news/s/168/168099_dancers_death_riddle.html. It was quite big news here in Manchester at the time.
Thanks

Not sure why the link doesn't work.
Anyway I will find the details and let everyone know how to get involved with the ride. I need to raise a minimum of £1100, so me being me I will be aiming to raise at least £2000.
I may be selling space on the t-shirt/s I will be wearing if people are interested in sponsoring it. I will be doing a full press release with pictures and mentioning all the sponsors. I will also inform all the MK Printing customers and putting links on the e-mail to your sites.
Once again thanks to people for your support and together lets see if we can raise the money, although it will never bring Amy back it may help prevent such cases in the future.

We're always being asked, as a business, to support different charities. I guess it's the same for all of us. How about we (the UKBF) choose one charity that we all support and raise money for whenever poss?
Donations could be made as forfeits for silly competitions (eg most spelling mistakes in one post....., bets, etc.). The charity could also benefit from our marketing campaigns (eg. We're donating x amount to charity for each booking taken this month....)
It could be along the lines of what Tesco do ie. nominated charity of the year.
Your thoughts please?

hayles,
i like the idea of that. to club together we should raise quite a sum for charity
and in addition raise the profile of the forum so everybody wins
the question is with so many members how do we choose which charity do we donate to? we all have our favourites, usually for personal reasons

I think that is a great idea, it might be a great way of all of us practising our marketing skills etc on a separate project from our business.
I throw in a website design for it if someone else wants to chuck in a domain name and some hosting.
With my charity experience I have loads of fund raising ideas to chuck into the pot as well.

An email poll?
Top three go through to a final poll?
Picked out of a hat?
We raise the money for a year and then split it for nominated charities?
(Although we have to keep it simple I guess to avoid any legalities. Probably best if we can decide on one charity to start with.)

In the past where I have seen people get together to raise funds for charity a common format is to raise funds then issue grants to people who apply for funding.
The Round Table and the Rotary Club work this way.
Just a thought.
PS What ever way you do it though, you will need to elect someone to look after the funds
Hayles

Hopefully a couple of our accountant colleagues would be willing to look after the funds?
Any volunteers?
Anyone else got any thoughts on the idea or how to choose a charity?
