After all the backlink chat on here recently it has got me thinking. When it comes to counting backlinks do the search engines count all links from one domain on many of its pages or just one. That doesn't make much sense but in layman terms I have a couple of links on blogs etc that are repeated over many pages of the same blog, do I get 1 link or value for each one?

There are strong indications that Google in particular will strongly discount multiple links from the same TLD.

Does this include to internal linking too?

Internal linking is completely different as it forms the architecture of your site. Getting it worng here can kill a site. With regard multiple links from a site, well it depends. Multiple links from a footer are devalued hugely. Multiple links from the blogroll area are highly valued (assuming the blog itself has value)

As with everything though, there comes a point when the law of deminishing returns kicks in.

Multiple links from the BBC or .gov.uk sites for example would result in all those links being treated as worthy.

Take your sig link for example, you may have 1000's of post which might indicate 1000's of link but Google at best will only use one of them and ignore the rest.

As always, it's quality not quantity that counts.

As a personal rule of thumb, I presume the first 10 links from one website count for something - everything else as likely devalued - by Google at least.
