When I click on search results links after doing a search, something takes me to pages other than the one I clicked on. Any idea what this might be?

Sounds like browser hijack.
If you Google that phrase you'll find lots.

Hi,
You should download Windows Defender, and MalwareBytes. (Adaware can be pretty handy too.)
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
I'd give them a shot, as malicious software removal tool thingy doesn't really target what you need.

I use Malwarebytes.org crewgirl, and generally that gets shut of the blighters.
Not had any experience of spybot,so cant say why it wont shift it.
Try malwarebytes free one,see if that helps any,is all i can suggest.
Although i also use AVG as well, just to be on the safe side these days.

Definately sounds as if your browser has been hijacked! I presume you're using Internet Explorer? Do you get the same problem if you use a different browser such as Opera, Firefox or Safari?

seen this kind of thing before - check your DNS settings..
my uncle's PC was doing this and in the end we realised that his DNS settings had been hijacked so if he tried to go to a site, he'd end up somewhere totally different (and unsavoury!)

I had the same thing, tried all the usual tools and ended up doing a format and reinstall. It was the only way to get rid of the bogger!!

use ubuntu!
never, ever get this kind of thing..
havent done a full reformat in ages now, and ive upgraded versions of the OS about 4 times now. Imagine saying the same on windows!
(yeah I used 98, upgrade to 2000, upgraded to XP, upgraded to Vista and now 7 all without doing a full reinstall...)
I doubt thats ever happened to anyone, is it even possible?

Well yes you could use another OS, but it does come down to how you use the system and how you secure it.
There are Linux system based viruses, and there are Linux system based worms. Malware can be written for Linux based systems, just like it can be for other operating systems.
And more people are writing proof of concept viruses for a Linux systems, because too many are claiming 'Linux doesn't get Viruses'.
For one of the best books on viruses, there is the subtly and suitably named Viruses Revealed (http://library.poisedsolutions.com/cyber-security/penetration/viruses-revealed.xhtml).
It should be noted, that currently there are very few Linux malware programs out there in relation to another OS. As to the reason why, well it could be that another OS just don't care about security, but more likely it is about the way 'usability' and security, tend to be in opposition.
