Hi, I am expanding my business from a Freelance role to a Ltd company - my job remains pretty much the same (designer) although my 'new' venture will concentrate more on logo design, however i wills till offer all the other services that one would expect.

Currently on my freelance site, i have a client list which reads quite impressively (it also contains clients that i designed for whilst working for a design company), my question is - can i copy that list onto my new website? Technically i have still had them as my clients / done work for them, however I agree this would insinuate that they had come through my new venture.

This is important for me as it will give my new site instant kudos - but is it legal? Ethical it may not be, but I did work for these people and would like to shout about it to be blunt.

Thanks for any help.

If all you're doing is changing from a sole trader to a ltd company, I don't see any legal or ethical reasons why you shouldn't continue to reference them as your clients. That said, I'd consider discussing the matter with your clients - you should always have their consent for using their name (if you haven't already). The last people you want to upset are your existing clients!!

Clients from previous employment is a different matter. Even though they may look great on a client list, they don't belong to you, and I'd suggest really shouldn't be used. Saying that you have been involved in projects for ... etc may be okay, but you should keep in mind the thoughts of previous employers and their clients (including any agencies through which you may have worked).

Good luck!
Steve
