View Full Version : Is this true?

Here is something I found out the other day that may or may not be true but all indications are that it is true.
If you do a google search using your keywords to check the position of your site and because you will go to your site fairly frequently, google automatically moves your site up using your viewing history.
So you may come up top on your computer but your next door neighbour, who never looks at your site googles exactly the same keywords and you might not even show up.
Does anyone know if this is true?
I did do a check on another computer and although on mine I come number 1 for my search words every time, on theirs I came number 4.

I think if you have a Google Webmasters account and are signed in at the time of searching this can affect the results.

I am led to understand that it is based on your web browsing history.
Not your own but googles so it wont matter if you turn off your history as google keeps its own.
Something to do with personalising what it thinks you want to see.
For instance, if you google bbc and always go straight to the sport section, then over time google will automatically push bbc sport section up your listings so its at the top.
I dont think your web master account effects it. Its something google are doing, to help with tailered searches.

My understanding is it's actually both, Google is trying to improve results for tailored searches. However being signed into a Google account does also make a difference, I can do a search on one of my keywords signed in and at No1, sign out of my account and I'm at No9 for the smae search

The irony of course is that google would consider serving different pages to different people "cloaking" and ban you :)

Underneath the snippet for each result in a Google search there are three small light grey icons like a speech bubble and upwards pointing arrow and an X. These are for Comment, Promote and Remove. If you click the promote button for your site (or any site) it will be promoted to the top of the results each time you repeat that search. ;)

It also does it when your not even signed in to your google account,
Not always, not as noticable and not for all searches, but you can
definately trigger something that produces false results.
Only way of stopping it from happening is by deleting any cookies google
drop on you.

to check, just repeat your search through something like proxify dot com

Lots of websites do that. Amazon for example, shows a customised home page to every user.
