Can someone advise me how to find a google ranking for our http://www.handsonaccess.com website - had the link some time ago but need to check again.

Of late I have been comparing sites with a competitor by putting "handsonaccess" in the search box but I guess this is an inaccurate way to compare.

Thanks

How do you find out your google ranking and can someone explain these PR4 thingys?

If you type in 'handsonaccess' into a search box then it has no real relevance to your industry sector, it only relates to your own company.

Ask yourself, would a client type in this phrase? If he is looking for your site only then maybe, but if it is a general search the odds are against it.

If you type in 'hearing impaired' then this is a more relevant search as it is more likely for a search engine to bring all your competition. That way you can see where you are in comparison to them.

In my opinion, your site is not focused on anything specific so would probably be low ranked for lots of phrases rather than being highly ranked on a few chosen ones.

Page Rank 4 out of 10 - but that figure is really novelty value only. Google don't update the figure they publish very often (about every three months according to most sources I've seen), yet change their internal ranking much more frequently.

The ranking is based on a very wide range of factors, so as such I'd suggest there's no such thing as a Google rank that means anything. I'd suggest the only meaningful result is your placement for a given keyword search at a specific point in time.

There are things to check however, such as searching on site:www.handsonaccess.com returns the number of your pages in their index (109) - this checks that all the pages you think you have are in their index.

Hope this helps.

Claire,

The Google toolbar will give you their published page rank. There are other sites (e.g. http://www.top25web.com/pagerank.php) but these aren't approved by Google and are outside their terms of use.

Page Rank (PR) is Google's way of saying roughly how important your site is. On a scale of 1-10.

PR4 is ok.

Claire, your site has a PR3.

But I wouldn't get too wrapped up in page rank, it is not all that important in the grand scheme of things, but it is nice to see it climbing up. :)

This site is good for checking your ranking in various search engines:

http://www.prsearch.net/

Click the tab you want at the top ie. "Google Ranking" and then your chosen keyword or phrase.

An excellent tool for doing this is called WebCEO (http://www.webceo.com/cgi-bin/go/clickthru.cgi?id=mattk). There's a free version of it which is ideal for small businesses and it lets you query multiple search engines and multiple keywords in one go!

Thanks Steve and everyone else. I was actually looking for site: etc. I was going to ask if PR4 was good because not sure on what scale from 1-10 is good and which is bad.

How can I get Google to tell me which sites are linked to us.

Can anyone say whether many keywords are good or less?

We have a Google Adword campaign on at the moment because we need to target employers, service providers and businesses. Anyone recommend any business reference websites/forums?

Try...

link:www.handsonaccess.com
related:www.handsonaccess.com

(Though a score of zero for both of those at the moment I'm afraid.)

The link: option returns only the higher ranked pages with links, for all, use *:www.handsonaccess.com (about 703 currently).

Cheers,
Steve
