I've just found out my host now charges for what was once a free service of submitting urls to search engines.

Anyone know a site I can still do this for free?

Haha, boy you're about to open a can of worms! You'll get a fistful of different answers, but I'll happily stick my oar in first.

Don't bother.

Your site will get "spidered" by the search engines through links on other sites. Submittal does little or nothing and if you use automated tool it's possible that your site could even be penalised by the search engines.

You're much better off getting your site listed on quality Web directories such as dmoz.org.

It's not for my site it's just for customers and some won't have any links to their site yet.

But thanks for the advice.

Yeah, I have some software for doing that - Just email / pm me when you want a site doing and i'll run it through the system for you... (FREE)

You will have to wait a day or so because the PC that the software is installed on is playing up at the moment

Gary,

I use www.1stopsubmit.com. They have a free facility which seems to work pretty well.

No, really; don't bother - I agree with mattk. It's against terms of use of most sites (e.g. http://www.google.co.uk/webmasters/guidelines.html - "Do not use unauthorised computer programs to submit pages").

It's pretty easy for engines to detect most automated tools, and could be detrimental to your customer's ranking.

How did my host get away with it? I always got good results using their submission method.

DO NOT USE SOFTWARE
DO NOT USE SOFTWARE
DO NOT USE SOFTWARE

if the engine realises software is neing used you will get banned form it forever.

trust me, i have worked in thsi industry for years.
there was a case last year, a compnay sued a dodgy seo company because thats what they did , and their (large business) website got banned from google.

the engines will spider you, dont worry about it.

then you should report your host, cos its illegal (in the search engines eyes). yes your host got away with it, but just imagine the reaction of a client whose site gets banned

but

DO NOT USE SOFTWARE
DO NOT USE SOFTWARE
DO NOT USE SOFTWARE
DO NOT USE SOFTWARE
DO NOT USE SOFTWARE
DO NOT USE SOFTWARE

and so on....

And what are they doing now then by charging for the service?

I'm not going to 'report' my host they are a fairly large company and i'm not an idiot.

Is everyone saying then that I have to go around all the search engines and submit myself. Or does the spiders really work in this way, one says by links, another says just does.

Can someone who is an SEO expert shed some light on it?

You can just build an XML site map and submit them to Google and Yahoo.

But I have found it better to just let them find you on their own.

I've already given you the answer

In all honestly Gary, there are no hard and fast rules. There is software to do it, but the value of that software is dubious at best. Companies will charge you for most things if they know they can get away with it.

If submitting sites helps you sleep better at night then I suggest you hand submit to the three main search engines and leave it at that.

you only need to submit your site once to each big engine

google, msn, altavista, msn, and a few others. there are about ten

most other ebngines woek from these

Plus of course, good content on your site helps your page rank, but you probably knew this already.
