Hi,
Just a quickie really.
Popular/cult internet weekly email, circ 80,000 in the UK + 50,000 overseas.
Salesman says 0.7 - 1% click through rate on ads.
Target market young males and creative internet geeky types.
Format text only. No html.
How much for a one off advert?

So you should get approx 900 click throughs (if the figures are correct)
You'll probably know your visitor to customer conversion ratios and lifetime customer value etc
From there you should be able to gauge a break even figure.
I suppose theres also those who sign up for your newsletter instead of buying a product and their conversion rate to take into account too.

yeah, we have figured out a break even point but sadly it is quite close to what they want us to pay.
However, as it is Christmas we hope for a good conversion rate plus the news letter remains on the website for some time in an archive so there is potential residual traffic there too.
If it coincides with some TV exposure I'm hoping for (i do plan on being lucky at least some of the time) then all things considered it is probably worth a punt. We won't loose out too much.

Don't forget, because it's Christmas every Web site and his dog are sending out marketing emails, so people tend to be alot more ruthless with the old delete button when going through their Inbox.

True, but this email is not a marketing email. We will be one 'recommended' link in an email which has cult status and is looked forward to and read thoroughly for it's highly original content.

I guess if it's close to break even it makes the risk less - is it worth making the newsletter more prominent to harvest more signups ?

Hi guys,
Sorry to jump in with your post but when advertising whether online or off-line - sales always quote we get 10,000 clicks every day etc... but how do we know this (or am I missing something :? ) Just interested to know.
Could we actually ask for a proof so to speak? I mean when you advertise with local paper in a way you do see the proof as you see tha mags everywhere but with online companies how do you determine this?
Thanks,
jen

It's a good point. The number of times I have been told about some amazing traffic figure for a website only to find that click throughs are rubbish.
Anyhoo, I beat the guy down by 25% and we will see if it works.

Good luck.
Setting an advertising fee is always difficult, as for a business the ad has to pay by producing sales to pay for the ad and make a profit.

Well, just to give you closure, we did the newsletter and got a phenominal click through rate and masses of traffic.
Sadly, however, the bottom line is that so far it has not been reflected in sales. We have not covered costs.
This could be down to our ability to convert, the product or the mindset of the folks visiting.
I probably should have done a special deal for them, but I foolishly thought the fact that Christmas is around the corner would be buying incentive enough.
On the upside we are still getting a significant amount of traffic from it (300 yesterday) and have cropped up on some interesting forums including one on the Motley Fool which is great.
And all those who visited us via the newsletter may remember us next time they are looking for a poncho/sombrero combo and happen upon our site.
I am happy with the amount of traffic and would do this again with this newsletter but would stick to key times of year and probably put in a special deal for the visitors next time.
Can any one else suggest a good newsletter to advertise in, or a place to find them?

Well - you never know - people will have probably bookmarked you (look for hits to favicon.ico in your stats to see how many)
Dare I ask if you managed to get any signups to your newsletter so you could stay in touch with all these extra visitors?

do you feel this generally brought untargeted traffic? it would be interesting to know what was in the newsletter about your product.
(matrixx, favicon.ico is pulled by MozFox by default.)
