Direct marketing? Do you mean offline direct mail, or other means (e.g. email)? I only ask because you often hear it said that offline to online conversions are difficult to get to work. So if you send out a (snail mail) mailshot aimed at getting people to visit your website, it will be less effective than online advertising, like sending emails or pay-per-click.
There's loads of information about direct mail out there:
Quite a good introduction (http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/0,4621,264994,00.html)
Step-by-step overview, with a link to a guide you can download (http://www.bcentral.co.uk/marketing/marketingmethods/direct-marketing.mspx)
The Direct Marketing Association (http://www.dma.org.uk)
But if you want information on emailing... errr, to be honest, I'm not sure where you should start! I guess the key thing is: be careful who you email, and don't get annoying - if people see you as spam then the game's up before you've even go started!

Great illustrations on your site.
I would agree with redmist, with your visually stunning product go for online marketing techniques. Direct marketing via mail works but you need to be looking at renting / buying good quality distribution lists and sending out thousands of enevelopes. On average you will get a 1% return rate.
Speak to people about ppc markeitng I think it will be more effective than mail shots.

I was thinking of sending out an email news letter to introduce my self but I'm not sure what is legal and what isn't. I wont bother with leaflets they annoy me too much.

There are lots of companies who will do an eblast for you. I've used trade associations and trade magazines personally. They charge a certain rate per list size and you need to choose a target market or it will get expensive.
