View Full Version : SEO & Adwords Dominate Ecommerce Online Marketing

In my experience SEO & Google Adwords seem to be the only forms of ecommerce online marketing that truly work for a small business. There are a few other ways that can create a few sales here and there but nothing significant.

Would you disagree? Are there any other forms of marketing you have experienced good results with?

I think people tend to overlook affiliate schemes.

I also find that ecommerce sites do very little with their customer lists.

(and never bother with any upselling)

Affiliate schemes is a good one actually. Just doesn't work for our existing sites.

I am not sure about email (and other) marketing with customer lists. It does work but in my experience the conversion is always small. Again it is difficult in our business model as we don't have a wide product range.

email marketing for brand awareness.
Social marketing on facebook..etc

I have dabbled with social marketing on Facebook. It doesn't have a significant impact on our sales.

I forgot about Google Products, it's a good one too.

Hi,

In no particular order, there are probably others
· SEO
· PPC
· eMail marketing
· Social Network Marketing
· Off-line promotions
· Discount codes
· iPhone Apps - can increase brand and website sales
· Affiliate marketing

Why do you say "Affiliate schemes is a good one actually. Just doesn't work for our existing sites."

Affiliate marketing is extremely powerful if managed and set-up in the right way, I have worked with online retailers who have tried and failed, tried again with some guidance and gone from a few hundred pounds to many thousands in additional revenue via affiliates

Most affiliates already have our products available via other large merchants who have a wide rage of products on offer. There is no point in signing up with us if we only sell one product on our site. In addition we are generally more expensive and although this means better commission it is a tougher marketing job for them.

I have been looking at a US network though as the above issue does not really exist there.

To get anything out of social media you need to really be at it for at least a good few hours a week on an ongoing basis and also not be spammy about it, i.e. just droping links to your products. Also, its best if used in conjunction with other non-commercial strategies. If your site is purely non-commercial there is not much in it for you. It's not really one for small businesses because its hard to measure, expensive and only a component of a larger campaign.

I understand :)

Have you asked a number of affiliates if they would promote anyway?

You sound like someone new in the internet marketing world.

There are loads of other online marketing methods besides SEO and PPC like email marketing, affiliate marketing, social media, banner advertising which generate millions for many online businesses

Jamie has been around for a few years.

The nature of what he's selling means that some of the promotional methods that would work with broad ecommerce sites don't really work for him.

I've received so many clients from UKBF that I've lost count.

Add social networking to the list - at least for my line of business.

Not far off 6 years. I know there are other online marketing methods and I have tried many of them. My point is that in terms of longevity and consistency SEO and Adwords seem to be the only ones that produce significant results time and time again.

Do you think any other forms of internet marketing are as good as (or better than) SEO and Adwords at getting results and can you share any examples?
