How does one find out when Google does it updates..?

It'll be 3 months or more, google just underwent their last major update (is it still going?) which included a PR update. If you didnt go up this time your gunna be waiting a while.

I take it that it is anytime in January.

The three month figure applies to Google toolbar updates of PR.

Google is thought to update its own assessment of incoming links more like monthly and your rankings can go up or down depending on many factors relating to those links.

The three month waiting game is only important for those who want to see what stage their green juice meter is at on the Google toolbar.

I just did a page rank check on my sites and was pleased to find that my link of www.go2malawi.com/blog/ has a page rank of FIVE.

But, www.go2malawi.com is only a rank of TWO.

Can anyone advise on how this is possible? Would't the value of the blog folder be represented in the value for the domain as a whole?

How does the Google page rank actually work?

Because there are 27 inbound links to your blog, but only 5 to your homepage?

Here's an article explaining roughly how PageRank works:

Matt's right ... keep those inbound links coming ...

Makes lots of sense, thanks mattk.

David thanks for the link - there is some good stuff on there!
