I have three external hard drive units; all three consist of a docking unit and a WD Caviar hard drive. Two of the docking units are identical and one is different.
So ExtHD1 has the different docking unit and a WD Caviar HD. When I plug (via USB) this into my PC (Windows XP) or server (SBS2003) it works fine. This has been installed and ruuning fine for some weeks.
ExtHD2 & 3 are identical docking stations and WD Caviar HDs. I initialised and formatted both of these and gave them a drive letter on my home PC (Windows XP) before trying them on my server. Neither is recognised by Device Manager when I connect them via USB into my server.
So I have now tried ExtHD2 & 3 on my home PC and neither are recognised again, no Windows chime when I plug them into USb, nothing in Device Manager or Disk Manager.
So I tried them on my laptop last night. But again not recognised. So I tried uninstalling all USB devices in Device Manager, rebooting laptop and plugging ExtHD2 in - it worked and laptop could see the HD. Then I disconnected and tried to connect again - laptop did not now recognise ExtHD2.
So it seems that it is something to do with the USB connection. But how can I resolve it?
Thanks
Chris
