I need to create some web buttons, boxes etc with text

is there any simple to use software for this?

Sorry for not answering the question directly, but... if you use images instead of text, it will make it harder to change the text or appearance of your links, and it might cause a slight SEO disadvantage too. Text links styled with CSS might be a better bet - websites like CSS Zen Garden (http://www.csszengarden.com/) demonstrate exactly what you can achieve with stylesheets.

Failing that, you could google for "free button generator" etc for websites that will create them for you.
