After a comment Emma made on here I started experimenting with some social media. (Facebook).
I think under certain industries this "now" works.
Below is an interesting article that will give you an idea of the possible success achievable.

Interesting indeed! It gives a clearer picture of the possible benefits of using social media.

I posted this in another thread, but it's probably just as relevant here.

As with a lot of things in SEO, there are a few people doing it well, and A LOT of people doing it badly. When I see same of the rubbish (product pages, site indexes etc) submitted to social sites in the name of SEO it's no wonder the industry has such a bad name.

As someone already pointed out, most of the sites themselves are nofollowed, so submitting to 1,000s of them is pointless.

So where is the SEO advantage in 'social media'? The people that read sites like Digg, and Twitter especially are the 'linkerati' (as if there aren't already enough buzzwords!) If you can put genuine newsworthy content in front of these people, then they will write about it, link it it, help it go viral.

So,

GREAT content + strong social profiles = attention on social sites = links from 3rd party sites

Some of our more successful stories have resulted in 2,000+ links, including several from the national press and key industry bloggers.

With an average 'paid' link being a minimum of £20+ the value of a good story being 2,000 x 20 = £40,000+

Yep your right. And the word of mouth factor of social media is a bigger plus.
With facebook i feel its bringing back "keeping up with the Jones".
