Hi everybody,
I've been looking around for an e-mail hosting company lately and there seems to be a shortage of such companies that offer what I want out of an e-mail hosting service, and that is:
An e-mail only hosting service
independent webmail/outlook access for each address
multiple domains on the same account (as we're doing this for our clients)
decent webmail
high quality service
oh and I forgot. It would be great to have something that grows along with our business
A company that's close to what we want is Rackspace with their in the cloud e-mail service. What I don't particularly like about it is the fact that there doesn't seem to be a demo and I don't know if I can host multiple domains on a regular account. (The reseller is too much given e-mail hosting is not our main business)
Can anybody give me some suggestions?

Why dont you check out shared plans you get unlimited email accounts and unlimited addon and parkdomain option.
we offer great webmail scripts like horde squirrelmail and even roundcube.
To access separate email accounts.

We currently have such an account that we plan on using to host the e-mail addresses until we find a nice e-mail hosting service, but it's not something that helps me sleep well at night. It's probably just my past experience with shared accounts (numerous long server outages, complete data loss x 2), but I don't see them as reliable and reliability is a must especially with e-mail.
Also the webmail applications in cPanel are not really suited for near 2010. As far as I can tell horde doesn't display html messages, squirell mail is a very basic client and roundcube never seems to work (at least not on my server). I'm looking for something a bit more 2010ish.

It's great. I use it full time, but some people like webmail. Also once in a while you need webmail.

Most of our email users are based on our Windows system using SmarterMail. It gives you a very Outlook type service based within the webmail system if thats of interest?

Have you considered Zimbra (http://www.zimbra.com/)? Open source, or I believe you can get it hosted as well.

How many mailboxes do you require?

Our Windows shared hosting plans (http://www.openmindhosting.co.uk/uk-hosting/windows-hosting.cfm) all come with access to SmarterMail Enterprise (http://www.smartertools.com/SmarterMail/Features/Windows-Mail-Server-Software-Webmail-Exchange-Alternative.aspx) which is a prety good alternative to Exchange and fully support POP, IMAP3 and 4
In answer to your points:
An e-mail only hosting service - Technically they are full hosting plans but no need to host a site if you just want the mail service.
independent webmail/outlook access for each address - Inclusive
multiple domains on the same account (as we're doing this for our clients) - Starting from twio hosted domains up to hundreds on the reseller plans
decent webmail - As mentioned above, SmarterMail is the market leader in Windows mail platforms
high quality service - Goes without saying :)
oh and I forgot. It would be great to have something that grows along with our business - Not a problem all the way through to your own dedicated mail server

How many mailboxes do you require?
There aren't many for the time being (I've recommended forwarding to most clients), but that's not the way to go. Maybe up to 50 by the end of the year.

How many domains would you like for email, and is that 50 mailboxes per domain?

Sorry for not being into contact lately.
I'll need to compute some figures and come back later. There might be more addresses/domains than I expected.
