View Full Version : Recommended UK managed VPS

I am about to launch a site and currently have the site on Heart Internet shared hosting (reseller). I am thinking of changing to a managed VPS and would like to know if anyone can recommend a suitable UK company? I am really impressed with the service of heart internet but they do not offer a VPS - only dedicated.

I would like to spend a maximum of about £50 per month. I have no knowledge of maintaining servers so for this reason I believe I need it to be a managed VPS. My site is aimed solely at a UK audience so I believe it is best to have a UK host.

Any advice much appreciated

Thanks

Paul

I'm with eukhost (a member on here) and no problems so far. Set up was quick and easy, and it's managed

Same here, I'm using a VPS from eUkHost. Their customer service is quite responsive so far. :)

I too am with EUKHost and have to say they had a fair few problems this month but these were beyond their control - problem at datacentre which affected several hosting companies however unlike many other companies eukhost kept livechat, phones and emails open and several members of their staff including the MD were on the forums constantly updating and answering questions. These are my 3rd hosting company and the only one I have stuck with for the past few years. IMO how a host reacts to a problem is equally as important as the package and for £20 pm I get instant help with queries a good VPS and kept well up-to-date with any issues.

Granted there have been a few problems here and there but they have been sorted out satisfactory and i've yet to find the hosting company where all goes 100% all the time. But as far as I am concerned EUK gets my vote for now

Another possible approach to this is to rent an unmanaged VPS, and then separately contract a company to manage it for you.

That does put you in complete control. If either becomes unsatisfactory, you can change fairly easily.

Why do you require a VPS?

The problem you will have is if you pick the wrong provider you will end up with the same if not lower performance than a decent shared hosting package.

There are plenty of cheap VPS providers out there that will give you a VPS with management for under £20/Month but to make the VPS platform pay for itself they have to put large amounts of VPS servers on each host node. So you are fighting it out for resources.

Thanks for the replies. I will look into the eukhost offering.

In answer to to the question "Are you looking for a Linux or Windows VPS?", to be honest I am not sure. I just need PHP and MYSQL and think my current reseller hosting is linux (not 100% sure though). What are the implications, reasons for choosing one over the other?

In answer to why I need a VPS, the main reason is I don't want the performace of my site to be affected by other sites on the shared hosting. I also heard that my site is vulnerable from attacks to all other sites on the shared hosting server. I was under the impression VPS would reduce this threat.

In a nutshell, I just want to get something one step up from shared hosting but with no additional admin required.

Thanks

Paul

You need to choose the right VPS provider then, as I said many low cost solutions will be heavily oversold so in most cases your website will not perform any better. You will be lucky to find a truly fully managed VPS solution for £50 or less per month. Some providers may claim to offer a managed solution but will give you a control panel and thats about it. Managed means a solution is tailored to your needs and the provider should optimise the system for your needs.

You will need to spend around £50/month on the VPS without management just to get a system that isn't oversold and will perform well.

I also heard that my site is vulnerable from attacks to all other sites on the shared hosting server. I was under the impression VPS would reduce this threat.

That shouldn't be possible unless there was a DoS attack aimed at a site on the same server as you but the same would apply to a VPS as multiple virtual servers would share the same physical host machine and network connection. It could be possible I guess if the host hasn't configured their servers correctly i.e. security and appropriate protection.

If you are looking for a quality VDS/VPS then take a look at www.clustered.net

Highly recommended and John certainly knows his stuff! they use a very reliable network and have real hardware firewalls to help protect you not just a number of iptable rules :)

If clustered aren't for you, avoid providers who use OpenVZ / Virtuozzo virtualisation, you don't get guaranteed resources using those technologies and can be affected very easily by a busy VPS on your node.

Always pick a provider with guaranteed and clear resource allocations, not fair share :)
