What on earth do you need to know the difference between these for?? :D
Purchasing is often a term attached to the department that produces the purchase orders.
Purchase ordering is the function carried out by the Purchasing Department.
Is that what you are looking for????
Now I'm mildly intrigued so can you tell me please why!!

Because he knew he would get at least 2 different answers!
Purchasing is synonymous with buying, and is used to describe buying in a business context.
"Purchase Ordering" is, IMHO, meaningless. But the term "Purchase Order" is used for a document, issued by a customer, that announces or confirms an intention of that customer to purchase.
Moreover a Purchase Order can be a vital document when dealing with some companies and institutions, who simply won't pay unless a valid Purchase Order is quoted on the invoice. The BBC is a good example of this!
