I don't use openmind, but I believe they've had massive problems this week with hackers deleting their files... I think they're still working round the clock to resolve it :(

Please only contact Phil if you're enquiry is urgent as he is working hard to get this sorted as soon as possible for his customers. :)
One thing's for sure, he's probably the best host I've known and his customer service is light years ahead of the rest. It's a testament to openmind's great service that his customers have rallied behind him during this incident and not jumped ship! :)

Pardon me for being a bit green on this subject but why do people do this?
Are they doing it to hijack certain information or because they can?
Are they doing it for fun or are they a bit short on brain cells?

They normally do it "because they can" or to deliberately cause disruption to a particular company

This looks like a direct malicious attack on a particular company.

Any "website" on the Internet is a target. Im the 3 years these forums have been going they have been hacked twice, for no reason other than some spotty oik wanting to prove he/she is |337 (or however you do this leet speak).

This stuff frightens me. What happens if your web host shuts down all of a sudden, I guess your site goes bang and you have to get a new host. However my domain name is also registered with my host. Will I loose this too?

Technically the host will have registered the Domain with a Registrar on your behalf (maybe in your name but probably not). If the host disappears then you MIGHT be able to get control of the domain via the domains controlling body (for .uk names this is Nominet) but the whole process would be drawn out and long-winded
As for the site itself - keep backups so you can switch hosts quickly, but without controling the Domain Name - you will have no way of pointing the domain to the new host / server.
PM me if you need to know more...

Just to add - I've just checked out your domain name and it seems that YOU are the registered owner of www.clairemackaness.co.uk, do you have access to a control panel for changing nameservers etc????

the control panel I have access to is at evohost!
I guess if it's registered in my ame though I'll be ok

I've only just picked up on this thread as I've been just a little busy over the last seven days ;)
Matrix was right, this was a deliberate, calculated and malicious attack on our business. I have spent a considerable amount of time, and money, over the last week to try and track down those responsible but just as they made damn sure the damage was as great as possible to our service, they also ensured that they buried their tracks.
I have been working 20+ hours per day to try and get as many people back online as quick as possible and I would like to extend my thanks for all the support and patience we have received along with my apologies for any business caught up in this.
Although I cannot release exact details of how the attack happened, I can assure you that we had in place as much protection as we possibly could, although in this case, the hackers disagreed and still got through...
The problem is that it doesn't matter if you are a massive company such as WorldPay or a smaller business such as ourselves, if these "people" (I'm trying hard not to swear) want to attack you, they will...
If anyone is still experiencing any problems or you have any concerns or questions whatsoever then please do not hesitate to contact me personally on 08456 445 789

Good to see you back up and running Phil.
I hope you learnt something that will bulletproof your systems even more :)
