My name is Adrian Madden.

Hello to everyone,so gald I stumbled across this website!!!!!

I have been twenty years, in the jewellery trade in London's Hatton Garden.I now feel the time is right to break away on my own and set up a little company to work on my own designs,as well as the manufacturing of the pieces.

I will be working from home...in a large shed in the garden,to be precise, but a very well stocked shed!!!!, it contains everything I need, and I can work very early in the mornings in my pyjamas!!!!

[Remember Marks and Spencers started from a single barrow in the East-End of London, with a sign on their barrow which read`don't ask the price, everything's a penny`....from small acorns!!!]

My jewellery is more fashion-led,than the more traditional pieces, and I have worked in all the metals[gold and silver],as well as platinum. One area,I'm keen to get in to more, is that of the corporate business jewellery, taking the logo of a company and working it into either rings,pin-badges,cuff-links or the more unusual objet d'art.

I have also design a collection aimed at the Christian community, using the names `Jesus` and `Christ` in various pendants and bangles...an untapped market!!!!!They don't appeal to every Christian of course, but I'm hoping to get them in to all the Christian shops and cafes, that there are across the country.

Another way of bringing in some money is offering a repair and re-polishing service direct to the public, and undercutting the high street retail shops that the public will go along to.

All and any advice on working from home, most welcome....and if your getting married at some stage and are looking for a brand new trade-price wedding band......

all the best Adrian.

Hi Adrian and welcome to the forums.

The hardest part of working at home is to be able to ignore all the small distractions and discipline your time during the day. Its so easy to get distracted popping in to vacuum the house, or wash up, or make a drink, or chat to the neighbour etc etc.

With regard to your targetted markets i cannot comment on the christian market so I will have to assume that you have done your market research as to the desirability of your pieces.

In terms of the corporate market most sales here is likely to be high volume/low cost. is this the sort of market you really want to aim at?

A former clients biggest seller was a miniature shotgun pendant complete with opening barrels and two small cartridges!!!

He was based in the jewellery quarter in birmingham.

Jst one thought. Giving your name and membeship number in the same paragraph in which you say that you'll be working from your shed. One word springs to mind "Security".

Anyway, good luck.

Thanks Nigel,Rob,Jayne,Alan and Lu...

Steve, the shed is very well secure, and there has not been a problem so far...needless to say, bars of gold are not left in there over night!!!!!I'm confident that it is very secure...thanks for your concern though.

I'm working on at least a home page by Christmas, for a website.

Is anyone else going to the Business start-up at the Excel Centre in Docklands at the end of november!!
I absolutely love this type of event, you can just turn up,and fill out a registration card for entry. You need some stamina for these two days from 10 in the morning till around 5 in the evening!.

Mixing with those who are all going down the same road....

Easy,
I know people[diamond setters in Colonial Buildings in the Garden],but,I've never worked in there...I have put pieces on Ebay, and it has been hit and miss,it's great if your a buyer though!!!!
Bought `The Passion of the Christ`,on video for 99 pence, two pounds postage!!!!I was happy enough...thought about making a ring in silver with the words `Celtic Irish`,as it would then a appear in the Celtic football club pages...of course I would be talking about `Celt`-ic Irish!!!!!and not the football club...
On eBay,everyone wants something for nothing, including me!!!There must be people who are making just pence on eBay.

Easy, what kind of money, would I be looking at to have a homepage with photographs on,I have already secured the domain name....

all the best Adrian.
