OK so here's the hypothetical scenario. I would like to ensure, as much as it's at all possible, to get my website to the top of the page when a search is entered for a local business within my online directory !

a. Is this easily accomplished - if not then why ?

b. Is this something I could do myself ?

c. Is it likely to be something I could do if I throw enough money at it ?

d. Am I somewhat delusional ?

e. Any other pertinent pointers for this noob ?

Many thanks in advance !!

a. No. already too much competition.
b. Yes. Anthing is possible if you have enough time. 5 years to learn all there is to know then another 5 to practise.
c. Yes but what's this going to acheive?
d. Yes - 99% of all directories are dyimng off through lack of interest.
e. Find something else to do.

Ah, so not the easiest thing to achieve then !!

Think like a search engine. They are already overwhelmed with directories clamouring to rank on page 1 for brickie in blackburn. At the same time all the brickies in blackburn want to rank well for their own websites.

And now you come along and try to muscle in. Unless you offer something substantially better than the competition you don't stand a chance of getting noticed. It's not impossible but not the easiest thing to acheive.

As I mentioned intially, this scenario is hypothetical. What I would like to ascertain however, is how one would go about achieving the main aims....

....so on that basis, and considering your points ( thankyou by the way ) I would need to think outside the box etc.... ?

Just throwing money can't ensure you of getting high PR. To get real good business response, you need perfect SEO. Here are some tips. Make sure you have links coming in to as many pages as possible. What does it tell a search engine when other web sites are linking to different pages on your site? Use the tags around some of your keywords on each page. Do NOT use them everywhere the keyword appears. Once or twice is plenty. If you have several topics that could each support their own website, it might be worth having multiple domains. Don't overdo the anchor text.
