View Full Version : Unusual advertising methods

Hi, this may be a strange questions but thought I would ask it.
Has anyone every thought about advertising their company in more unusual ways? I am sat here in the office and looking at our expensive projector that is hardly ever used, was thinking of ways to put it to good use!
What if we were to use it to project an image on to a building for a few days, like a giant billboard I guess. I have no idea the legalities of this i.e planning permissions required and so fourth.
It just got me thinking about unusual methods people have employed in marketing their business? like sky writing, hot air balloon you get the idea.
Thought it might be interesting to see what others have done, come up with. it also may give some inspiration to others.

Ling had a good one - had a Chinese (or was it Russian) missile launcher that had her website emblazoned on it, and had that parked up on the A1. Interestingly, the fake missile that she had on it was pointing in the general direction of Tony Blair's house in Sedgefield...

You can create a stencil template of your company name
Place it on a dirty paving slab
Clean the letters inside your stencil template and presto, your company name visible in the dirt of a main street pavement

I heard of a company doing that somewhere - what are the legal implications of that?
I also heard of someone using a projector to broadcast images onto buildings - as far as I can remember, it's not illegal to do so, but I think that you need to get permission... from someone.
Oh, and the projector thing - probably best to do it at night...

You could sponsor products which are unusual, for example why not sponsor inflatable sheep and have the product branded with your url, get a leaflet inserted into the product as sponsor and have the retail carton printed with your info...
A supporting microsite on the web and a facebook / competition "the golden sheep" would create some media hype. The sponsored products would be sold in pubs / clubs up and down the country.
Bah-rilliant...!!

What a great (crazy!) idea !! So what is Gordon Brown's address again?
Mind you I am at a loss to where you would pick up an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile from? May be there is a business idea there!

Lings Rocket is STUFF OF LEGEND!
Wonder if she still has the rocket?:|

The rocket will be a home made replica - the vehicle is a Zil, they were manufactured in the chec republic for the polish and russian armies if i remember correctly (friend had one in his 'odd' collection). It has two engines, one a 14 litre diesel which runs on anything, diesel, petrol or a mix of both and does 1/2 mile to the gallon. The second engine is a petrol only one, which is there to keep the main engine and tank warm overnight in arctic conditions.
You also need a ladder to check the engine oil, as the bonnet is around 9 feet from the ground! lol! Width is pretty stupid too, when my friend first bought his, he used it to empty some rubbish from a house he was doing up. It was on a small cul-de-sac, and the Zil, when parked to the kerb was about a foot off the other kerb - neighbours were not overly impressed!
Great truck though, and although stupidly large on our roads, look very much at home in their natural environs, they are amazing off road and pretty indestructible.
They are found on ebay due to warehouses b eing full of them from a cancelled order, mate paid £3200 for his, which was an ops room, with rocket launcher pod on the roof. The winch on the front still had greaseproof paper over the cable!!

I believe you need permission from both the council and the building owners. I can remember someone got in to trouble for projecting an image on Big Ben and MI5's building down the road.
If you have a shop window or have access to a disused shop with a large window you can coat the window with a thin white paint and project an image on to it from inside. With the right coating it should be easily visible from outside.
I got a lot of mileage from a simple t-shirt with "I Love Spreadsheets" written across it in the same style as the "I Love NY" t-shirts. I wore it to all the networking and business events I went to, it was plastered all over my website and forum signatures and I also wore it to clients sites. I always stuck out like a saw thumb as I always surrounded by people in shirts and ties.

What a great idea!
I don't suppose you know where these were purchased from- I've searched for branded foam hands before but never seen them at a low enough cost to enable us to give them out like that.?

You can buy diffuser film as used in signs and using a projector connected to your PC run a 24/7 ad or film on your shop windows. The image is good front on but not too special at an angle.

Ling is great at marketing but I guess her approach will turn of some corporate buyers.
