View Full Version : using the word club

Hi there

I run a successful small limited company with my husband, and am considering starting another by myself based on setting up a graded training system with awards for my hobby/sport. I willl be charging for registration/membership, and entry fees for tests/gradings. I will be selling badges, certificates etc.

I would like the title of the business to contain the word 'club' becuase it sounds friendly, but I do not wish to mislead those joining into thinking it is a charitable or not for profit organisation. Nor do I wish to become involved with commitees. I intend to control the profits if there are any, myself, or with my co-directors should I go ltd

Can anyone advise me if there are rules and regulations concerning commercial 'clubs' or anything I should do to protect myself against accusations of impropriety.

Many thanks
Sarah

Hi Sarah

Companies House give guidance on sensitive words and expressions at;
http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/about/gbhtml/gbf2.shtml#appa

As you will see 'club' doesn't specifically feature. What I was going to do as a next step was see whether any other companies are registered using the word club - I'm sure there are - but the Companies House database doesn't open til 7am on Monday so will have to wait for that one :(

Looks like that might not be too much of a problem. I take it there are no other competitors offering award schemes etc in the field you intend to operate in?

Hope that helps :D

...based on setting up a graded training system with awards for my hobby/sport.

Can you say a little more about what type of training system and what hobby/sport, or would that be giving too much away?

There are but only at much higher levels - a bit like you can take a degree but no A levels or GCSEs :) sorry to be cryptic - will send a PM if that helps?

Steve

A PM would be great - if you could let me know a bit more detail then if I can send you any info that would be relevant I'd be happy to help.
