Built my first wind turbine a few nights ago , and it was alot of fun , check out my youtube videos of it.

heres the video of when I first had it fired up at about 4.30 am lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsjNLSrC6yM

Next is the video of what I found in the morning

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IdhN4gPQYU

and next is a video of it producing electricity today

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjorxOdZdMA

and one more for good luck if your not bored already.

Well done! For sure, it's going to take many attempts before your satisfied, but your efforts are laudable. All the best with it.

Mind you, where do you live that gets that much wind?!

in the fens, land is flat for a good mile round, in cambridgeshire UK

Well done! Reading the papers forecasting power cuts in the years to come, it looks like something we could all benefit from doing!

How much electricity did you generate (e.g. enough to power a light bulb, laptop or what have you)?

How easy was it to build & how much did it cost?

Sorry to be asking so many questions, but I'm a teacher and I wonder whether its the sort of project we could try at school.

Once again well done - you've inspired me.

Great stuff.

One of our associates builds slightly larger ones.

you could easily rig up a laptop / mobile phone charger unit easily.
it is amazingly easy and prfetty cheap, this produces 1v per mph i reckon, cost under £250, if you want to build one i could help you.

Also this turbine had a severe crash and i had to redo the blades and hub and it will never be 100% perfect , with new blades on she will be flying as in the nigh time video.

The aim is to recycle car batteries and have permenent electric storage, I also plan to make smaller wind turbine *2 to power a 12v heating element and pump to keep veg from frosting in winter or for running indoor winter hydroponic grow racks.

Dont forget the severe optical illusions when watching the video.

Get this badboy on a tower with a better tail , next step is gearing up :)

it makes hardly any noise at all , all the noise is the wind really , when it gets flying it will make light noise nothing major, plus no near neighbours anyway :)

Wouldn't a simple lightweight plastic blade off a 12 in fan be even more productive. I see load of these put out with the trash when they get a bit grubby so free too and there is a motor too.

PS. I think tht you have started something here. Get the cod liver oil capsules out guys.

Well done you, I daren't let my son see this. He has already set up a solar panel on my summer house running to 2 old car batteries. We get enough power to run a light or a cd player. He worked it all out himself, not bad as he's dyslexic, I haven't a clue with these things. Not so sure about a wind turbine though as we live on an estate. mind you keeping the greenhouse warm through the winter would be a real plus!!! maybe I will let him look!
And to Jeff the teacher, how wonderful if he had a teacher with ideas like yours, just for once he would have come top of the class :)

How wonderful it would be to have a pupil like your son - sounds like he would be able to run & complete the project and I'd be able to take all the credit!

these are custom made aluminium fast spin blades, they are designed for this purpose , 12" fan blades are a waste of time for torque purposes, plus i did alot of research on what type of motor i neede d, most motors are totally pointless as they need a **** load of rpm to even start producing wheras this one is putting out power immediatley, even when you turn the motor arm with your fingers, good stuff.

What is it going to take to make a serious dent in your daily electricity usage? How can you save the power so it can be consumed later. Are car batteries good enough?

This looks like it has possibilities, we have a place in the Pennines where the only time the wind stops is when it's raining.

Could you tell me what voltage it produces, and do you run it through an inverter?

here is an idea i had a while ago. how about a wind turbine in the shape of like a turbo charger, blades enclosed with duct work running from the vents in a house roof, bottom of roof tiles etc to spin the turbine.

no horrible looking wind turbine

i sincerely doubt that would be productive , once i finish the design of the turbine it will look far from ugly :), i think its beautiful anyway :)

Why does this make me think of the recent animated movie 'Up!'?

This is a problem that's currently being faced by people who purchase these turbines and solar panels. Storing the energy is extremely inefficient, and the best way to recoup it is (at this moment in time) to push it back into the grid.

The electricity supplier then refunds you what you've put back into the grid.

Good effort, I guess to boost the amount of electric produced would require a gearbox to make the most of the wind you will be exploiting. A really good project that I would like to be able to follow, judging the posts in this thread, I'm not alone.

Getting some decent Volts today , Waiting for some charge controllers to arrive in the post , simple devices that let you charge a battery , maintain the charge then put the surplus into a dump load, heater / light , I have yet to start putting batteries in series / parallel combos, and havent finished working on a crude gearbox yet but its nearly there.

This is the turbine operating today.

There are many things I could improve but I am well on my way, and have been well and truly bitten by this bug :)

How much has it cost you so far?

If you were to get a big one installed, I take it you'd need planning permission from the Cooncil?
