We have been asked to supply a couple of shops to a business that sells vibrators and other toys. Does anyone have any input as to what is allowed to be displayed that won;t cause offence to any search engines and jeopordise other people on our servers?
Anything to watch out for?

As long as your server allows you to host adult websites (not all of them do) I would suggest adding a landing page with a warning that some of the items on this website may offend, 18 plus, that sort of thing, that way anyone else on the server has to click to enter the website. Nothing is in their face so to speak. Most search engines, if they do not allow "websites with adult content" will have a box that you have to tick to say that it does contain adult content. Other search engines will say on the submission page that they do not allow adult websites. There are also the search engines that are specific to adult products.

What I meant was will there be any implications for other people on our servers?

I would be more concerned about file sharing web sites.

I am concerned about everything but would like to know views on whether it will affect other clients on the same IP? Anyone?

Simply put - don't risk it.
Nobody is able to give you a completely straight answer because there is no publicly available definitive and correct answer.
Based on my own experience:
There is a risk - Sites have been cross penalized based on IP address
The risk is minor - Legitimate sites shouldn't be penalized by "dodgy" IP neighbors.
Why risk it for £5/month hosting fees? I believe its a question of the professionalism of your outfit.

Booble is the main one, then just type adult search engines into GOOGLE.

Thanks for your input. Although I don't think it's un-profesional to cater for this industry, I agree that it's better to be safe than sorry.

Sorry - I didn't mean to suggest it was unprofessional to cater to this industry and it would be very hypocritical of me to say so. What I do mean, is I would personally find it unprofessional towards your other clients if you didn't take the minor risk seriously and take action to mitigate that risk (at a cost of £5/month to set up alternative hosting, or £1/month for a second IP address.)

Speaking from experience I have sold a few thousand online shopping carts to the lower end of the market and some of them was selling adult toys. Now adult toys are not full blown adult websites. They are just a website selling a different line of products.
Now getting around to your question I have hosted a mixture of online carts on the same server and a chunk of them sold adult toys. Now I so no evidence to suggest that the other shopping carts on the same server was effected in anyway due to this.
I cannot be 100% for sure about your own servers but I was running dedicated servers so I could keep a close eye on things.

I would stay well away if I were you unless you want to download and vet every video which these guys also usually sell. If just one slips through with child content you would be in dead trouble.

It's not videos, it's dildos and lingerie. I don;t see anything too dodgy there do you?

Its completely legitimate business - but ask your other clients if they would like to be hosted on the same IP as an adult store? Considering sites on the same IP have been penalized based just on their being on the same IP, while the chance is low, you now have all the information in front of you on which to base your decision.
My strong recommendation: Don't subject your G Rated clients to any association with your X Rated clients.

They say that to start with but believe you me these guys can't wait to get into the high profit margin videos. I know one of m ex partners in a pub started off with just lingerie then he got the idea of being the porn king of the south east going to these dildo shows. Nothing wrong in those but its bit like the difference between the odd spliff and ending up sniffing lines of coke.
You have been warned.

How about putting them on a different IP address on the same server. Do you think that would have any impact?

You have been warned.[/Oldeagleeye please do not put all of us who sell adult toys in this bracket. We have been trading for 2 1/2 years now and videos etc are not what we want to do or will ever do.

Personally, I'd get a VPS with a dedicated IP and you will have no problems. As mentioned, the cost is negligable so why take the risk.

If your server is set up correctly (so that sites aren't accessible through both IP's) a second IP specifically for the adult site will mitigate the risk sufficiently.

Fair enough 1 in 4. My point was however that you would have continue monitering the site. Is it worth it for £10 or even £50 quid a month hosting fee.

I have never heard of mixing hosting of adult and non adult to be detrimental on a shared server and IP. I think you would only run into issues if you did not put the right bits in the code to tell the bots it is an adult site.

Oh and let me know if you need a merchant account for your adult site. We can sort for you.

We aren't opening an adult site. Shop Maker is a hosted ecommerce service we provide.
I don't even know if the clients site can be called an adult site. I know the things they are going to sell are for adults but do a few vibrators and some lingerie make it an adult site?
This market is new to me so opinions please.

To be brutally honest I'm surprised and disappointed this is still a question...
Best Practice = separate IP
Anything else = Half-arsed and unprofessional towards your other clients.
Simple - case closed.

This is what the problem is with this country that alot of ppl get offended by the matter of sex toys there is nothing wrong with sex toys.
Sex toys is the only market today that is growing in this downturn

The reason that the big dildo's are selling is that we are all buying for when our MP's come a'calling come the elction. I say we but I actually bought a bloody big broom handle instead and stuck a pigs trotter on it. Can't wai for that visit. ,
