Im looking for any female-run businesses - internet based or not

It's true, I do run SillyJokes with Top Hat.

It is an online party shop which we started in 1999.

It started with a remote controlled fart machine as it's only product but now sells 3000+

We supply anyone who needs something silly including the BBC, The Forestry Commission, Damien Hirst and The Krankies.

The site employs about 12 people, has won a couple of prestigious awards and has a healthy six figure turnover.

Hi Lucy,

Alas, I haven't been running my business for long enough - I'm barely a foetus in business terms, but I'm sure one of my clients would be interested.

She runs her own recruitment company based in Hertfordshire and is really doing rather well for herself.

She doesn't have a website as she currently has enough clients to keep her going without, but I can provide contact details if you'd be interested?

I find it so encouraging that more and more women are taking the lead in business. We've missed out on their talents for too long.

Yes, but the fact still remains that the business world is male dominated. That's why I originally posted this thread - one of our features in the next issue is issues facing women and we are now going to feature more female case studies in the magazine to promotw women in business.

A colleague of mine at a business exhibition yesterday (and also a board member of Unique Women in Business) summed it up, she said

"You go into Lancashire and you can actually smell the testosterone"

I must admit that I didn't realise that there was still that sort of discrimination in the workplace.

Women are human beings after all.

I suppose its the same as racism which you would have thought that by now would have not been an issue but to some people it sems as though there is some importance in being white, or afro carribean, or asian.
Shame we cannot as a species live together.

Hi there,

Interesting post!

I thought my mother might fit the bill actually: My grandfather set up our family construction company over 40 years ago. When he and all his brothers retired it was left upto my Auntie to be the main proprietor. My mother joined her sister on the board a few years ago and we now have 3 non-family directors and 3 family directors who run the company.

When you consider the industry they are in, it is quite an achievement for 2 women to run a multi-million pound construction company. They were credited on this fact by being interviewed by Granada North West Tonight some time ago to help promote women in the construction industry.

the web address for your perusal is: www.conlonconstruct.co.uk

Look forward to your reply,

All the best,

Jamie

To be honest, I don't think its much a case of discrimminiation, more a case of women have other things to deal (kids/looking after home etc). But now there are loads of womens networks trying to encourage women to go for it, offering advice and support.

I studied this for my dissertation whilst at uni and found that most women were afraid of the stereotype of the business world, rather than what actually happens. Also, women are more likely to take less risks than men, they tend to do more research, whereas men are more likely to take a risk. That's not to say that women don't take risks though - some do. Perhaps it goes back to the fact that the majority of women have other things to consider and maybe decide to stay within the comforts and confines of a 9-5!

Hi,

I think many men think that they should bring more money into the home than women. I think they feel less of a man if a woman earns more.

I have also found, starting this second business by myself, I am getting less suport from my other half. He says he doesn't know anything about computers, so he'll let me get on with it. However, when he wanted to buy a bakery, I knew nothing about that, but put 100% into helping him and still did all the housework too.

I wouldn't swap him for anything, as many men were brought up this way. The secret is, don't do the cleaning up etc, then when he moans the house is a mess, you tell him to help, as you were on strike. :D

Another way, is to say, since you had all that cleaning up to do, you are too tired for anything else...see how soon they get the vac out

Hi James,

We would be interested in featuring a case study on the company in the magazine however we are currently running close to deadline and wouldn't have time to get the required information. Also, in the upcoming issue we have a property/construction company so we couldn't put it in the next issue either for fear of repeating industries. Please don't hesitate to pass on a message to send us press releases though and we will consider them in the future. Send press releases to
news@ye-mag.co.uk

Oh that's a shame, especially since we are in the local Lancashire area. What info do you require at such short notice ?

I don't actually work for the company myself, but to my knowledge I don't think that they reguarly send out press-releases etc. Due to the nature of the industry, they only put company literature together when tendering for a job.

Im not sure what the other construction company you have on the books entails but our company is massively involved into property development, schools, churches, hospitals, housing and commercial property. (might give you another angle).

I would be more than happy to forward any info onto yourselves if you wish to use it in the future.

All the best,

Jamie
