Had a close call with a faulty hard disk recently but was fortunate and managed to recover.
Anyway although i backup improtant files i am now looking at taking an image of the whole hard disk so if the worst happens i just restore the image onto a new PC / laptop.
What software does everyone else use to backup there hard drive?

on my local systems I use Norton Ghost backing up onto a USB hard drive :)

Thanks Matrix i have just been reading about Norton Ghost and it seems good. I have a seperate USB drive like you and can set to automatically backup daily.
If the worst happens can you just restore on a virgin machine and the image makes it just as the old (i.e. installs all applications etc?)
Thanks for reply

Yep :)
You'll need the original Norton disk to do this - then you just boot from the Norton disk and follow the instructions

You can buy original versions off ebay a little cheaper than in the highstreet.

Thanks Rob i have seen those and yes a lot cheaper (50%) in some cases. I am always cautious with software that is so important though just in case of license issues etc.
Retail is only £35 and have seen on e-bay for £18 but in this case i think i will use High Street just for peace of mind as i have had my warning with not backing up and will play this by the book
Thanks again Rob

We have used Norton / Symantec Ghost for years, I wouldn't recommend it these days, as there are better products on the market.

How do you fancy taking an image backup without shutting the machine down? Marvellous.

Norton Ghost 10 does exactly that and seems to be working well thanks

What I would really like is
A wireless hard disk installed in my car, so I've got easy off site storage, exactly where I am, at home or at work.

No, what I want is one of those very funky in-car wireless hard disk music players, that automatically sync with your home PC's collection when you get home! Available in the US apparently. Pah :(

So import it? Just import it for personal use and hopefully avoid the 19% tax band, lol

Now that sounds like a solution. You got a link to any info?
