As part of my deliberations over whether to go ltd or not I got some quotes for accountancy charges. I knew they were going to be more expensive than sole ones, so wanted to know a ball park figure.

I amm crap with figures, so I want an accountant to do virtually everything. I will write out all the sales invoices and purchase invoices onto spreadsheets, but after that forget it.

So they will be doing everything else.

Compleet book-keeping, vat returns, tax returns, etc. Plus running a pay roll for me and one employee.

Anyway, here is one quote:

Preparation of Accounts of the company in Companies Act format;
Discussion and agreement of the same with you;
Submission to Companies House and Inland Revenue,
Together with tax computations and CT600;
Maintenance of company statutory books. £1900.00

Completion of Self-Assessment tax returns for each Director £ 200.00

Maintain payroll for 2 employees at a cost of
£3.00 per employee for setup;
£3.00 per pay slip (monthly);
£5.00 per employee for completion of the year end returns £ 88.00

Total £2188.00


Is this a lot of money or not??

It's a lot more than I pay now for a sole trader, but what do you think??

I asked him for a quote for everything so i should be included.

assuming that it is, (and it should be) then what do you think?

Cowboys? Daylight robbery? or reasonable?

i would probably need a bit more info but overall it looks a bit steep.

However everything is relative.

What happens when you want to call your accountant for a chat about the business or some advice, is this included in the fees or is there a seperate charge for this and other things such as meetings based upon number of minutes spent?

No, statutory books refers to maintaining the register of company secretaries, shareholder, directors, etc that go with running a limited company. Most years there are no movements with these and therefore tend to require next to no work at all.

If you're concerned about his charges, you could ask for a fixed quote that breaks down all his charges and the work he will/may carry out...you could also ask another firm for a quote. :D

The payroll charges seem a bit excessive, we charge about 50% of what you are currently paying. As for book keeping itself, largely depends on how long it takes to process the invoices.

I am not paying any of these charges yet, just doing some homework on the costs of going ltd. :)

I will certainly be in touch if I do go down that route. I am just outside Donny so we might be able to do something. (unless you are a Leeds United fan)

Don't know if that is typical for accountancy fees up north but it does look high to me. Down here in sunny Essex my limited company "all in" package starts from £100pm or £1200 pa.

I wish more potential clients would admit that they're crap at bookkeeping and leave it to an expert where necessary. One of the surest ways to annoy an accountant and probably earn yourself a higher fee is to provide incorrect books after promising that the books wouldn't be a problem.
