Google Product / Base / Froogle

Hi,

We've been using google base since it was froogle a few years ago, we manually upload a .txt file each month and it's completly sporadic as to whether we have a front page number 1 listing of page 10 placement.

does anyone know what the key to getting the top results on google products is? There's a few competitors who are always at the top and their listings are often not as good keyword matches so I assume there's a few key things to do to bump up the google products.

The feed has to be optimised for many things. You say that your competitors are often not as good keyword matches. Well obviously they are, otherwise google wouldn't put them there.

there are many many things involved, and in short, the more relative information you provide G with, the higher you will appear.

I have developed a simple system for one of my clients that automatically uploads their entire product catalogue to Google Base in an XML document. Very simple, very effective and once set up does not require any manual intervention at all.

Yes that's easy to do and most online shops have that set up.

Yep, we have an automatic feed. Goes in every night and we get an email in the morning telling us whether it's been successful or not. I think the thing with google base is to provide as much info as possible. I guess most retailers just fill in the required fields, but there are quite a few other optionals you can fill in to to let GB know more about the specifics of your products.

Ranking on Base is also based on how long you have been on the site.I found many merchants who have been there before me rank higher.
Keyword Research is very important.Make sure all your products have the keywords that people are using to search for your products.

One other thing to mention is that Google is extremely "picky" about the data that you have uploaded and if any of it doesn't comply with the particular encoding type (UTF-8 I think if memory is correct), it will fail to upload that product.

Have a look within your Google WebMaster account and it should list any error messages.

well spotted ...i meant 42 but only showing 9.

Normally it would tell you on Data Quality why some are not listed. Also it is compulsory to have the 'New' or 'Used' attribute included now.

As for how to rank high, I have not figured this one out yet but will keep trying. Hit and Miss being more miss at the moment. It's almost as if it's random rather than calculated yet I know it isn't.

Are their any symbols or unusual characters in the titles or descriptions. I beleve this can be an issue.
