Printing can be quite tricky to understand and you sometimes get completly different results from what you were expecting.

I am here to help answer any printing questions from paper weights to design help. I am on the forum quite a bit or you can e-mail me at info@mkprinting.co.uk

We love working with small and new companies, we believe our sustomer service is second to none. My company has been set up to make printing as easy as possible and hassle free.

Any questions please e-mail or post here

Here are a few quick tips if you are designing anything yourself for printing.

When opening a new document, make sure you have it in CYMK mode not RGB. If you design and print in RGB the colours may be different than what you expect them to be.

Always put a 3mm bleed on each edge. A bleed means past of the flyer for example, that can be cut off. With printing there is always a small error margin when cutting but this is usually kept within a 3mm boundary. So make sure all import text and images are kept at least 3mm away from the edge.

Always proof read everything. I do this by reading it backwards to make sure I say every word. Get a few people to view your design before going to print to see if they can spot any mistakes.

If you are using images on your design always try to use high resolution images and not ones from the internet. You should design in at least 300dpi (a setting when opening a new document) and most images from the internet are 72 dpi. This means when you drag a large 72dp image onto a 300dpi canvas it will shrink a great deal.

Producing your own designs for business cards and flyer etc can be quite simple. I suggest getting “Learn Photoshop in 24 hours” for those who are interested. Designers charge a lot of money for what they do so if you have the time to do it yourself it is worth it.

For complex designs I would use a graphic designer as they will be able to do things better and faster than you can.

If anyone has any more questions please just ask and I will do my best to answer them for you. You can also use my live chat help on my website www.mkprinting.co.uk to ask myself or a colleague for any advice.

Well spotted. The reason why I made a mistake there is because there isn't a spell check on here, plus it wasn't going to print. You make a spelling mistake in a forum it isn't a big deal, make one on 100,000 flyers and suddenly it becomes a problem.

Those who have already contacted me I hope I was of some use. To answer a common issue, I believe Photoshop is the best for designing and easiest to learn. If the design work is going to take a long time to do, you may as well pay a designer just to do it for you and then just concentrate on running your business.

I can recommend some freelance designers if people need anything designing. I am sure there are quite a few on here too.
