Hi All,

I have a courier company doing overnight deliveries.

However I have a van that is just sat doing nothing and I wanted to use it to increase some revenue by doing sameday deliveries.

I have been advised by a lot of companies that I can expect 55p per mile for doing this kind of work.

However my company is VAT registered and therefore to be competitve I would need to charge around 50p + VAT.

The question I have is this, should I put this kind of work through the LTD Co or set it up as sole trader business.

Should the VAN be registered to me or the Co?

Any advice would be great.

Andrew :)

You could also just sell the van, if you are only going to try to do sameday your rate would depend on whether you find the end client or sub contract. I assume from the rate it's a small van.

In all honesty I reckon there is a huge oversupply in this dying market, personally I would go for a larger van and concentrate on removals.

That's a sign of the times!

I started that game in 1989 when diesel was 35p a litre (I also bought a brand new detached house in the same year for £35k to give an idea of the cost of living) and I was getting 50p a mile even then for a small van as a contractor to another firm. It usually worked out much better than that as jobs doubled, trebled up etc.

Can't imagine how anyone survives on that nowadays :|

Thanks MH and Chalkie for the recent comments.

Anyone got any advice in terms of me being ltd and wanting to claim the 40ppm rate available to self employed? Despite me being a LTD co??
