Hi All
Following a recent thread started by Ozzy "SETI@home" http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=4155
I was prompted to re-install a program that I have previously run that helps Oxford University search for a cure for Cancer. Further information can be found at:
White paper http://www.ud.com/rescenter/files/cs_oxford.pdf
Download information http://www.grid.org/projects/cancer/
Download it at http://www.grid.org/download/gold/download.htm
I have set up a team called UKBF Fixers that can be joined by following http://www.grid.org/services/teams/team.htm?id=2319F9FB-F235-4A28-92D5-A789F5D3D990
Lets see how big we can make this team and how much data we can crunch for them!
Good luck all!

Affirmative appointdirect.
I have joined the team but am running the software on a trial basis. If it does not take up too many resources (ie slow my computer down too much) i will continue, if not i will have to take it off :-(
Then there is a thought, i could run it on my wifes pc, i am sure being as medic she will not mind.
In fact even better, i'll throw it on there as well while she is out at work:-)

Hi all
I have been away for 5 days in Spain so my CPU time has been rubish... We have 5 members from UKBF now... Very poor show :-(
Is it true what they write in the papers about people caring for animals more than we do other humans? Jayne's post on Cruel Circus gets 261 views and 23 replies whilst this only gets 127 views and 7 replies (most of them from me  )
Just so you know this program takes up no more memory or space than your average screen saver :)

Jayne
You don't need a super computer, just download and install the software, register and join the team, the program runs in the background and you probably won't even notice it is there.
Basically it helps find a cancer cure by performing processes on your PC and then sending a report back on the result.
So far the members at grid.org have provided nearly ½ million years of PC processing.

Hi Jayne
I will second what VS says.
If you look at in its simplest form its JUST A SCREENSAVER.
I also look at it from the green angle. I leave my main PC running 24/7 at least when the machine is idle it is doing something usefull and not just contributing to global warming for no reason

ps For all you animal lovers out there VS is right animals can get cancer too. I had a dog that had its live extended for many years by tamoxifen

Hi Jayne
It is really simple to install (Download information http://www.grid.org/projects/cancer/) and does not require any additional effort once installed, it runs in the background so you won't even know that it is there other than an email every now and then to tell you how many points you have earnt or if you are lucky enough an email to tell you that you have found a possible cure...

Since we are bragging:
Have a look at my individual score:

Over 400.000 and 2 years CPU time.
How long will it take you too catch that up?

That is where they have been very clever with this distributed computing thing (which was started by SETI@home). It does make you competitive which of course gets more results for them.

Oh what it is to have a string of servers at your disposal :)
I could run a few more if they had a Linux UD application. I have a few LInux servers I could use but I don't fancy installing and running Wine on them.

Hi Ozzy
I am not running it on my servers, just my desktop PC and since the start of this thread my laptop. The reason I have a good score is that I have been running it a long time. (I know it says device installations 9. That just means I have installed it 9 times. Each time you do a hard disc upgrade etc.)
You will be surprised how quick you WILL catch up. With 5 current installations your work rate will now be faster than mine.
Regards
Dotty
ps Russ good on you for starting this team
pps Come on the rest of you this really is a good cause and will not cost you anything. Only 9 people have joined so far. There are currently nearly 2500 members on this site. According to the statistics over 800 of these will contract some form of cancer some at some time in their lives. This is your chance to make a small contribution to help improve the odds for these people.

Can I just ask how we are competing - points, hours or or results? I have got more results than some, but seem to have less points and have achieved that in less time?
Also in case you are not sure whether to join in or not as you are concerned about the effect on your PC - It doesn't have any noticable effect. I have now been running this for a few days and can see absolutely no change to the speed, memory or anything. It is for a good cause and also gives you more stats to keep an eye on !

Hi Kate there is an FAQ on this here:
http://www.grid.org/help/faq_points.htm
Basically your points represent the amount of computation your computer has contributed. In any given time people with more powerful machines will return more results than people with less powerful machines. The points system allows a level playing field. Think of it like a golf handicap.
Of course although I have talked about it being competitive its really just the taking part that matters. Anybody who runs this software even for only a few minutes a day is making a worthwhile contribution. With such a mammoth task and such long odds against it. In reality it is just as likely that a person with just a few points will come up with the 'magic bullet'. Just as the lottery is often one by someone who has bought a single ticket.

Dotty

Yes, I agree. It is a nice feeling though when you see that your system has completed a task and provided a result and is now working on the next one.
