View Full Version : Flyers in Freebie papers

I am thinking about getting my flyers to be distributed with some freebie papers in and around the essex and london areas.
I am just wondering if anyone has had any success or if anyone has had any bad experiences with such advertising in the past.
Also who do you recommend to help with the flyer distribution? I have contacted cwtadvertising in my local area. Has anyone ever had any experiences with these or heard of them before?
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Hi,
Why not go to the newsagents yourself and ask if you can put them in the newpapers, then your leaflets would distribute themselves :D
Down side, you'd have to be there for 5am to put them in

Nice idea jayne.
I would do that but that would mean that a few roads in my area would get my flyers and no one else :(

Hire some attractive people and distribute them at rail stations and in high streets... People will take them if they are curious and will not simply throw them away when they go thud on the doormat when they fall out of the paper....?....
Personally I find leaflets in local papers very annoying.....

I have some people already lined up for the shows next year, but I cant wait until then. I am currently down southend every weekend handing these flyers out to the cruisers with some results so not all bad there but it could be better.

Something else that I have just thought of that I think I heard from another member of UKBF (I believe it was Dave Ashton but dont qoute me) was that the royal Mail will deliver leaflets to all addresses within your choice of post codal areas...
This could be beneificial and I beleive is quite in-expensive... Perhaps someone else can shed more light on this or you could check with the post office..
On a seperate note I notice you are from Essex I live in Chelmsford, where abouts are you?

We had a bit of a nightmare with leafleting companies... see below...

...so would probably recommend Royal Mail although they require quite a long lead time and they also have quite a big minimum order (maybe 10,000?).
Does anyone know if it is legal to hand out flyers outside tube/train statons in the morning? Can the station manager come out and tell us to leave?

What about approaching the papers direct - you'll probably be able to negotiate a better deal if you do it yourself. The Evening Echo is based at basildon and also produces loads of freebie papers in the local area.
Also what about trying car magazines - rates might be a bit higher though. They can offer you inclusion in specific distribution areas.
One more thing. If you could get a team of distributors (students love this kind of work) and hit all the stations on one train line (ie c2c) during a peak time period you might have a good success rate.
Keir - i think you'll find that as long as you seek permission first it should be ok. I guess they just don't like having to tidy up afterwards! It can't be illegal as you get at least one given to you at liverpool street station on any one given morning!

Hi,
We use the post office for our distribution as you get discounts, but you need to be distributing thousands (we distribute 10,000) for decent discounts.
Many of the posts mention Inserts - for your local newspapers I would say that inserts would be between £25 - £50 per 1000 inserts and more for a magazine. I know my mum receives a free local rag and my brother used to distribute this while he was at school - he used to get a whole load of papers and a whole host of leaflets to insert manually.
With a magazine they will most likely take care of everything - it is usually done straight from the printers - you just have to send them your leaflets - hence the extra cost
Hope this helps

A few years back we signed up to deliver Yellow pages and Thomsons - stuck our leaflets in with them :) Was hard work but got the leaflets our and burned a few calories...

Thanks for all the advice,
I have been in touch with the papers today so just waiting for a call back on prices. As for the magazines I have emailed them (well the publishers anyway) and just waiting for them to reply to my email.
As for getting students to hand out flyers I was thinking about this but not sure. I mean how can I tell that they are actually handing out the flyers and not just throwing them in the bin and spending the time in the pub or just out shopping?

Hello again,
My goodness - all these essex boys and girls! i;m from Billericay so right in the middle of you two (if you'll excuse the pun).
I don't really know how you can be 100% that the leaflets are being handed out - apart from going and checking which would defeat the object. I know a couple of students who could gladly do with the extra cash and do hand out leaflets outside clubs too.
I guess as long as they were adequately compensated for their labour and tell them that you will be checking you'd be ok. Or is that me being naive?

Thats what we like! the good clean, fun loving Essex girl sense of humour!
Seriously though I think you are right, there comes a point when you have to put your trust and faith in to other people. No man (or women, for fear of appearing sexist) is an island...
I still think people handing out leaflets are a good way of promoting your business, especially if its targeted the right way. Another thought that I had was driving around our county looking for "for sale" signs in people's car windows and putting leaflets on the screens for them... Also, go to all the garages and car part dealers and ask to leave leaflets on the counter, you might even pick up business direct from them?
Be lucky

I just got a quote for 20 pounds per 1000 leaflets from a national distribution company. With a minimum order of 10,000.
The leaflets will be inserted into the free newspaper that is delivered in the area that I am targeting.
If anybody finds a better deal, including through Royal Mail, let me know.
Thanks..

Has anybody hear of a leafleting company called Link Direct and/or done any business with them?
One of their services is leaflet distribution using local free newspapers.
Thanks.
