Hello UKBF my name is FoXX.
I live in Wiltshire and I work for the MOD Civil Service.
I created a business incase I had to change career or if I decided to take on consultancy work alongside my regular job.
The business has been dormant since its inception, so any questions I may fire at the forums will be in that vein............for now at least.

Dormant companies are a doddle. I posted a response on this recently

I do agree that you should have waited before opening the limited company, but on the other side of the coin, you might have done it to stop others from registering the company name, for example.

I don't agree with closing the limited company down though. There are alternatives which are probably more suitable (especially if you do intend to trade in the future).

One alternative is to keep the limited company as a dormant company. I did this a few years back when I wasn't ready to trade, but wanted to register the company.

Basically with a dormant company, you need to file accounts (which is a single A4 sheet that you enter a few numbers into) and then file an annual return (both once a year and you won't need an accountant for these!).

You should also receive a letter from your local tax office asking you to fill out a form. you do not need to complete this form, instead write to them with the dates you intend to begin trading on.

Keeping the company as dormant only costs £30 a year (£15 each if you file online, I think) and has the advantage of not having to register the company again in the future.

Just make sure that if you want to sole-trade, you must not use the limited company name if you keep this as dormant. You may only use the company name if the company is trading.
