Dear people,

I need a merchant for my webshop.

I know worldpay is the most used merchant but i was
wondering if there are good and cheaper
alternatives for me.

Can someone please help out,

I intend to do business in the uk, but people outside
of the uk should also be able to order.

There is a member on here, Simon from NoChex so that is a plus for them as you get 1st rate customer service. Their down side is the inability to take overseas payments. The plus side is that chargebacks are unheard of!
Paypal I would seriously not recommend which in my opinion only leaves Worldpay.

Wouldnt trust any company that uses paypal as their card payment system. The other issue with paypal is there is a limit of £500 for a single transaction for non varified members - may not be an issue but if you are selling PCs or such it is a major one.

I would certainly only go with a provider that can give a seemless introgration with your site otherwise you can either look like a small time operation/ new starter/ teenager in their bedroom claiming to be some multinational company and to me none of these make me want to hand over my credit card details.

I wont recommend any suppliers as another division of my employers do offer credit card facilities

I use paypal, are they not good then? I thought it was all 100% secure.

I wasnt commenting on their security/ professionalism but just giving my personal opinion on any company (not trading on eBay) who uses them as their credit card processing. To me it doesnt look good on the company using them and given the amount of choice most consumers have online I personally will go to a retailer which appears to have their own credit card processing over one using paypal.

I have had a couple of experiences of subscribing to a company that used paypal for its payments and the companies folded shortly afterwards (a bit of research showed both of them were run by teenagers in their bedroom rather than the established companies they claimed) - I also tried to order a laptop from a company who only used paypal on next day delivery but with my personal circumstances paypal was going to take over a week to varify my account before they'd take payment (it was over £500) but their rival who did their own card payments were able to take it then and there and get my laptop to me the next day.

I am sure there are cases where paypal has worked great and is the ideal solution for the business - I just wont be one of their customers.

I don't advertise the fact that I accept Paypal on my site, but it is an option when people go to the checkout.

I'd say about 60% of people will still choose Paypal over my merchant acct.

I can only think that people feel safer entering their CC detail into something like Paypal because they have heard of them, rather than entering them into a website they have not seen before, where who-knows-what will happen to their CC details.

Hi,

We too would not reccommend using PayPal for large transactions. We provide merchant account facilites in assocation with Bank of Scotland Merchant Services and would be happy to provide a bespoke quotation. All transactions are handled securely and although not the cheapest, it is known to be secure.

Have a look at Protx www.protx.com

You will also need a merchant account with a bank but I have used them for 2 years with few problems.

btw, I had planned to ditch PayPal when I got the Protx facility, but plenty of my customers use it so have kept it as an option.

We can provide you with a merchant account with very competitive rates. We would be happy to discuss with anyone not happy with their existing provider, would like to reduce processing costs or needs a new merchant account.
