1024 is the best screen resolution for my website resolution per google stats, as its the single largest resolution size, and the majortiy of other resolutions are of a higher px, rather than lower.

But. My question.

Do you build the website to this size, or do you allow for the fact that people tend to browse with a sidebar? (consumer type, home market. So, not design/techy people etc).

And what's the techy term for floating window size that automatically resets given the size of the viewers window.

Many thanks

Liquid design or layout is the term, where the layout will expand to the width.

The problem with 1024+ is the text width, it can become a little long and undesigned, 800 gives a good readable width. So, people use the to reign the text in.

A play on the liquid layout is white space expansion, there the columns are held in width, but white space columns in between expand to push the design out.

So:

A1B1C
A11B11C
A111B111C

640 for mobiles is still with us, 800 for some small laptots, so hard to say, I am going 1024 from 800 for some of my sites at the moment. For ecommerce I would say 1024 and a mobile site now.
