Code change

Hi,

Help Please

If I change <tilte> bit on the code page I have just discovered, will it change the look of my site?

Is the Meta Description and Meta Keywords ok to change too. I've never done it before, so I was going to delete the text bit between the other squigley bits and put new text in. Will it mess anything up.

It doen't tell me in my new book, just how to view codes :D

Change whatever you like in between the <title> tag and the closing </title> tag, this is just what appears in the top of your browser window, and yeah change your meta description and keywords they wont muck anything up.

Couldn't do it!

I right clicked on my home page, clicked on source, a note pad screen came up. I altered the title and pressed save and nothing happened. I tried it a few times...what did I do wrong, I looked on the html learning site and did what it said? (typed between the <> things) so why doesn't it work.

Hi

Jayne, before you go ahead and do a load of changes, bare these points in mind.

1. Your<title></title> tages should contain at least one keyword that you feel folks will be looking for your site with. e.g. in my own case "mobile discos serving Northampton" etc etc.

The Title tag is important as far as your keywords are concerned.

2. REgarding the Meta Keyword - you could use this space to put in commonly misspelled words relating to your site as they won't be publically viewable e.g. quite often someone will type in moblie, instead of mobile, and disoc, instead of disco.

You could also use common sinanins.

3. Meta Description - Quite often this is what a search engine will discplay in their results, so it's a good idea to put something here that will make someone want to click through to your site.

I'm trying but when i've typed in on the note pad thing, it will not save..i've been researching what to put in, just haven't figured the putting in bit yet :D

Not sure if I'm misunderstanding you here, but you can't just view source and make changes directly on your website. You can only do that to a copy of your website that's on your own PC, and then you'll have to upload the changes to your web host. (Otherwise we'd all be changing each other's websites all the time! ;))

You don't necessarily have to have a complete copy of your web site on your computer, you can either use an FTP programme such as Terrapin or Cute FTP to download certain pages from your site, edit them and then re-upload them or you can use a program such as Microsoft FrontPage (Euch, I know) to open the site on your computer and edit the site directly, so when you save a page it is saved to your site.

Been learning some more :D Right, I have microsoft front page. I've figured out how to change all my words now, ok with that. But how do I get my web site into Microsoft front page?

When I got my site, my designer gave me a link to open in an email, is that any good to do it? I could ask my designer to do the changes, but then I would have learned nothing myself.

You should have FTP details that consist of a server name, a username and a password. You can then use an FTP program to connect to the server and copy your pages to your comnputer. Once you have made the changes you can then copy them back to the server.

I'm back...i've sorted out the FTP account and was given 3 ftp:// addresses, I typed these in the google www. bit, and none of them opened (said there was a problem with the server). Did I do that right to connect to my server? Couldn't find anywhere on the control pannel to type them.
