The best webhost????

Hi, im new to the forum and a bit lost.

I have just set up a small company and am looking for a webhost, and im not really sure what to go for or how much it should cost.

I basically need to register a .com domain for a very simple website and email for a sensible price.

A friend has recommended fasthosts but I just wanted to check with you guys before I go ahead!

Doesn't sound like you would need much space / bandwidth. Our £5 per month plan would probably suit you.

As Alan mentioned you should also look at Matrixx hosting.

Just beware of the cheap hosts, that have to oversell to make profits, this normally results in more downtime than you should expect.

There is no such thing as "the best host" - just the best host for you...

There are several hosting companies represented on these forums - vshosting, matrixx and myself just to name a few (sorry to anyone I didn't mention!)

We all offer good value, resources etc but we are NOT identical - no doubt vshosting & matrixx will reply in this thread so check out the links in their signatures to see what they offer - or PM them and see what they (and myself) can do for you.

I use www.evohosting.com I have a business package which was £10 per month or £100 per year (with FREE Mp3 player) but you wouldn't need anything that big. They do a smaller package for about £3.50 per month and even cheaper if you pay annually. I've had my site now for two months and I have had no problems. The online helpdesk is also really good and being a web design novice it was very handy. The owner will answer all your typically girly/stupid questions within 24 hours.

Hi Chris,

Feel free to give me a shout if you like - domains are under £5 a year all in and although we're not 'cheap' our new billing system means you only pay for the services you need - so if all you need is a couple of email addresses, a little diskspace and no databases etc then the price should be fairly low :)

You can also choose to pay monthly or annually and via credit/debit or Paypal.

It all depends on what you need.

As I always tell people: If you only want your website to be available on Wednesday afternoons and for a few hours on a Sunday morning (but taking 5 minutes to load a page) and don't mind having to pay £2 a second whenever you phone up to moan about it not working - then by all means go for the cheapest you can find.

I would say all of the above are great hosts, except Claires, because i've never heard of them, but i'm sure Claire knows they are ok! :D

What beats me is people want to pay for a nice house - if they got it too cheap they would be suspicious, a nice car - again if it was too cheap they would be suspicious - whats different with hosting.

Although prices have dropped over the last few years as diskspace has grown per server - anyone who thinks they could get unlimited telephone customer service for £10 a year is living in cloud cuckoo land.

I'll throw this one into the mix as well just for the sake of completeness...

I use a hosting package called SBI

yes I'm an affiliate of there's too, but I wouldn't bother telling you that if I didn't use them and weren't totally blown away by their value.

If you want to click to their site without my affiliate part of the deal, just leave off the bigmix.html part of the URL.

It took me three years to make up my mind that paying between £30 and £50 a year for hosting just wasn't the way I should be doing things, considering that I pay over a grand a year for Yellow pages ads that give me nowhere near the return in terms of revenue.

To be honest, the SBI system's hosting is probably the tiniest part of what their package offers, but I'll leave that to you to find out :)
