How accurate is Alexa. For example if I go and look there at the traffic on my site and compare it to a similar site is the traffic it showing accurate?

You have to remember that the results are provided by the number of people who've installed the toolbars. Take the results with a pinch a salt:

us: Alexa 94k, Netcraft 54k

I agree, I gave up looking at Alexa a long while ago. Much better to track your sites performance by watching your position within the search engines (mainly Google) and using your site stats.

Alexa is a great tool as long as you only use it to give you an indication of how you compare to a similar site, don't take it as gospel. As webit said, it only collects data from those with the toolbar installed.

I was recommended Alexa, but unless you have lots of links, it wont give you decent stats if your not in the top 100,000.

I just research my competition by typing in site:www.(my competitions web address).co.uk into Google

Alexa used to give us crazy ratings - it moved us to aroung 50,000 and we're sliding (finding our level) at around 90,000.

A a guide, any sites in the top 100,000 are in the top 0.3% of all web traffice in the world.

At the end of the day it has value as a PR item but wont get you any more traffice (unless through PR or as a 'mover and shaker')
