Lycos Banner Advertising

I have been approached re. Lycos banner advertising on the main site (on a per keyword basis) and on the shopping site (again on a keyword), so that I pay and choose a keyword, then whenever that word is searched, my banner comes up on the results at the top of the page.

I am very suspicious of all these types offers now having had my fingers and bank balance seriously burned in the past. Does anyone have experience with this type of advertising and have they found it worthwhile?

Almost impossible to say without testing Kate BUT...

Banners aren't that popular anymore.

But see if they will let you do a limited test.

We placed a banner on Lycos for the keyphrase 'villa spain' last year and the results were negligible so I would have to say it was a waste of time and money.

We have been bothered on a regular basis in the past, and always said no.

Too much hard sell, not enough searches for the key phrase.
