"Dummies guide to marketing" covers the basics and is not bad although I've read better but cannot remember names.

There's a guy on the web called Chris Cardell who knows his stuff and sends me regular marketing tips via email. He recently did a small business marketing conference call which was very useful. I think his web address is www.cardellmedia.co.uk

If you're looking for something a bit "out there" Purple Cow by Seth Godin is a very interesting read. Basic idea is that for your business to succeed it must stand out.... like a purple cow.

I liked Seth Godin's Free Prize Inside:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0718147723/1567

He also has a blog at:
http://sethgodin.typepad.com/

Jay Abraham is also worth reading:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0749921692

You can sign up for his free newsletter at:
http://www.abrahamspublishing.com

If you join audible (audiobooks) via http://www.audible.co.uk/cdwow you get a 1 month free trial with 3 free audiobooks, they have 3 of Seth Godin's books including the latest one 'All Marketers Are Liars'. If you cancel within a month of joining there is nothing to pay (and you can keep the MP3 audiobooks).

These 2 free email newsletters are also quite good:
Business Essentials Ezine:

The Marketing Experiments Journal:

If it's for writing web copy, I rate the following...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0814472494/

Not sure I agree with absolutely everything, but nevertheless an excellent book and a very easy read.
