Its a directory. Ive no experience with it personally, but its generally a good thing to be in the directory.

The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors.

The problem with DMOZ is that because it is human edited - you have to wait for your categories editor to approve your ad and I have heard stories that some categories have months / years backlog of entries awaiting to be approved! :(
It can help your search engine ranking once you are listed though ;)

Its a great place t be listed, as it seeds so many other directories.
Its like getting 100 inward links in 1 hit.

Here's a secret if you're trying to get listed.
We tried to get listed but there was no editor for our category. After waiting 6 months I decided to email an editor in a related category to see if there was anything they could do.... and hey presto we were listed a week later!
It's amazing what a personal plea can do... they're only human after all!

The ideas i have gained today though reading these threads have given me renewed optimism and drive.
The valuable advise i ave recieved on here not to mention the valuable contacts i have made. Horray for computing, horray to the internet.

You goto DMOZ find the category where you would like to be and then it says submit url (or something similar) near the top right of the page I think it is.

I've been waiting two months. I might try the e-mailing thing though. Also if there are no artist editors I might apply. Who knows, I could have you all listed within days!
