Hi All,

Quick question.. When trying to register the business name as my domain name, does the domain name have to be exactly as the business name (like on my stationary).. Or can it be slightly abbreviated, the reason I ask is because my business name contains UK at the end, and if I register a .co.uk it may sound a little garbled...

Also, does a .co.uk sound more professional than a .com

Thanks

Daniel

For a .co.uk or a .com the answer is no, pick whatever is best for your business.

If you are selling mainly to the uk, I would go for the .co.uk (others may disagree), if the .com is availiable buy it as well

Go for a co.uk if it is mainly selling to the UK. There are two reasons for this:

1) Its cheaper
2) Your customers instantly know its a UK based website where as if its a .COM they may not realise straight away and go else where, I have done this before.

As Tophat said the name dosn't matter, you could use your branding name for example. Many companies trade under a different name to what their LTD company is called, however you must put your LTD company name, address and registration number on the website.

Cheers all,

In 2 responses you've answered the questions for me, just wanted to make sure my website name wasn't too garbled or long-winded for people to type out or relate too

Thanks

As an aside, I appreciate that there are quite a few hpsting companies etc on this forum, but just to iniitially register the name and sprt out hosting later where is the cheapest but best place to use, I have seen 123reg.co.uk, who seem reasonable

I use 123 normaly, I have never had any problems, just avoid them for hosting.

The majority of hosting companies will let you have a domain name at cost or little more than if you already have a hosting package with them.

Sorting out your hosting requirements should be part of your web site research, of which domain name is another constituent part.

Doing it your way may be more expensive in the longer run. It's false economy to treat them separately IMHO.
