I need someone who knows about internet live streaming i.e. costs...hardware...software...basically how it is done.

Any recomendation as to which direction to look will be appreciated.

What are you planning to stream (video or just audio)?
What do you mean by LIVE - video/audio on demand or LIVE live streaming i.e. a radio station.
What is the budget?
Are you planning to reach as many people as possible?

There are various solutions available to you depending on the budget and what you are streaming. From Microsoft to Real Audio . Or you can Open source streaming solutions.
