As a photographer and a businessman I have been asked to help out in setting up an International Photo Competition. Basically I’m looking for pointers on the legalities especially cross border, licensing, sponsorship on prizes and any problem with subsequent taxation or restrictions, etc.
Has anyone one any experience on running competitions?

Im not sure about running competitions but I wouldent mind entering if its open to everyone.
Is it just the best photo you are looking for or is it categorised e.g. landscapes, portraits and so on.
Thanks
Chris

William,
Some of the answers you require would all be dependant on whether the event is a profit making venture and who your target market is aimed at, the professional photographer such as yourself or just enthusiastic amateurs. We at the Isle of Wight Digital Imaging Group (photography club) have just finished our first online (non profit) Worldwide Photographic Competition, as we already have the web presence the only outlay we required was creating the online gallery a willingness to participate and if applicable the postage costs of the prizes. It was a great success, so much so that the sponsors were very keen in actually offering to treble the prize fund in anticipation of our next competition. As it happens our next competition free entry to anyone who has an interest in Photography will be available online within the week. I have included a link to our online forum events/exhibitions here
Digital Foyer (http://digitalfoyer.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=7&sid=7728727b90d3cbae40cb6c2227225114)
Contained within the list are some (for profit) competitons from the big boys that include entry fees payable. Frequently these fees can seem prohibitive to some amateur photographers and as such may restrict or perchance enhance who your target market would be.
Chris we would be happy to have you enter our next competition :D

Thanks for that link Kate any help is most welcome.
There is a lot of research to do, the rules, submission process, judging guidelines, legalities and promotion to name a few.
