Working for free wont pay your bills - have respect for yourself, and at least cover your costs
Excellent, I am currently building my own site and am using google ajax feed to perform a slideshow.
I am fine loading the standard script into my page and the slideshow is working. However I obviously want to change my pictures into the slideshow from Picasa.
The Javascript/Ajax is used by an external server and I have checked it out. It is about 40 pages long, I was thinking of loading it into my page but once I found out the size of it obviously not an option, and of course the whole point of ajax is to save memory.
Here is the basic code on my site that is working with the pictures assigned to it. I am assuming I am needing to insert som more code. Here it is:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"/>
<title>Google AJAX Feed API - AJAX Slide Show Sample</title>
<script src="http://www.google.com/jsapi"
type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="http://www.google.com/uds/solutions/slideshow/gfslideshow.js"
type="text/javascript"></script>
<style type="text/css">
.gss a img {border : none;}
.gss {
width: 288px;
height: 216px;
color: #dddddd;
background-color: #000000;
padding: 8px;
}
</style>
<script type="text/javascript">
function load() {
var samples = "http://dlc0421.googlepages.com/gfss.rss";
var options = {
displayTime: 2000,
transistionTime: 600,
linkTarget : google.feeds.LINK_TARGET_BLANK
};
new GFslideShow(samples, "slideshow", options);
}
google.load("feeds", "1");
google.setOnLoadCallback(load);
</script>
</head>

at the moment i do this part time, along with my real job, so costs = 0, i need to get a foot in the market so to speak, and need to show case my work, which i haven't got, so doing some free work will grab some experience in the enviroment and show what i can do, also the free website may lead to more work from the persons ;)

Hi,
I think you should put some muscle into redesigning your current website. It doesn't look really professional so customers might get the wrong impression.

As others have said, offering your services for free devalues both your own work and that of other designers/developers
Why not talk to local charities etc., and offer your services to them?

I am a freelancer also, I understand/remember when I was offering to do work for next to nothing, or for free, to build my portfolio.. In some respects I still am. Like you I have a full time job, fortunately for me I work in the Media department for a small company, so I am able to play around with websites etc all day.
I agree that your site does need a little work, as it doesnt scream professional. I see what you were doing with the layout, but the first thing I think when I look at the website is that you forgot to style the text, actually scratch that, just looked at the CSS and you *have* forgotten to style the text. Don't get me wrong, Times New Roman works on some websites, I just dont think its destined for yours.
Im not claiming to be a design genius or anything, but if you want some help making it look a little more professional, I can give you a few of my thoughts etc, PM me and I'll pass over my MSN/Email address.
Here's one of mine: http://www.photoessex.com

Lewis.

Just download safari for windows, and get opera and lynx while you are about it.
Latest design has gone awry - looks different in FF and IE.

Hi Lewis
Have you viewed your site in 1024 x 768 resolution? I've got a 1680 x 1050 display so your site looks good, but not everybody else does...

See what you mean - it's a bit big isn't it. Use the zoom facility in FF to see how others see it.

FYI the contact links on the side menu don't seem to work on your website, I think they need to be .php rather than .html
Best of luck with the new venture.

I'm sure as most of you seem to be web designers, we all have a set of browsers and resolutions to code for. 1024 X 768 should be on that list as it isn't totally outdated and Safari should also because of MAC's.
You don't have to, but these things should be considered.

arghhhhhhhhhhh. You need experience, not a portfolio. Anything you do right now is not going to be good enough for a portfolio and will only show how bad you are.
Why not just get some experience by practicing. If you are a designer AND developer why are there no graphics at all on your website? If you are a devloper then buy some templates and start working out how to implements them. Stick a few customised template son your site as examples and start selling them as templates.
But please start with your website first, get the basics right.

Once you've created your own website then you can think about a portfolio. I'm not questioning how good you are or not, but your website is the first thing that should be done.

my site is being worked on when i have spare time :rolleyes: Not every site needs graphics and being a web developer means i write my own code, not copy someone else's designs :eek:
My website isn't the best i know but they say the hardest site to build is your own...

**** i, Check out the hostiliaty. Dont worry about it, I started by offering free websites and now have an agency with 5 employees working with names like amnesty international and sky sports. You need to start some where and what you are doing is great, Ok there are errors but in time you will fix these. ANd lets be honest some might be w3c complient but if they were made by one of our juniors they would be sacked.
Keep at it and work hard, You will get there and doing what you are doing does not devalue anything. Building a reputation takes time and effort.
If you want to email me or PM me and im sure we can find a client who would take you up on that offer.
Maybe you can do some HTML emails or something.

the reason im doing the offer as my portfolio is very minute and needs some work on it
The situation is a win win for anyone ... I get what i want from it and the person gets a free website coded and seo ready for £0,
people are commenting about my portfolio site which is a work in progress and shouldn't really matter as im not charging for this

does this include hosting? domain? don't want you being out of pocket..it's all very well doing some freebies but don't go buying things for other people.
if business picked up a little bit i would send you some very cheap work e.g. for those just starting out on the web design ladder who want a domain and hosting and a holding page...at the moment though..not many people are interested due to the summer holidays and the kids being off.
